Vehicle Description
Beginning in 1932, Ford enjoyed a distinct advantage over the
competition from Chrysler, GM, and the independents. That advantage
had eight cylinders and a price as low as $460 for the roadster
model, while the other automakers tried in vain to compete with
four- and six-cylinder engines. At first, the Ford V8's styling
wasn't much different from the Model A that preceded it, but each
year Ford's designers would revise the styling to keep up with the
times. For 1940 Ford's chief designer, Eugene T. 'Bob' Gregorie
reached the pinnacle of styling for the brand's extensive line of
V-8 models. Regardless of whether the car was a two-door
Convertible, Coupe, Sedan, Station Wagon, or Sedan Delivery, from
the sleek vee-shaped prow to the bottom tip of the rear fender, the
V-8 Fords were truly beautiful. The styling drew heavily from
Gregorie's masterful Lincoln Zephyr, giving Ford's pedestrian
lineup a decidedly upmarket boost. Buyers had a wide range of body
styles to suit their needs, from sporty roadsters to dedicated
commercial vehicles. As much car as it was truck, the Sedan
Delivery bridged the gap between the two. The model was based on
the 1940 DeLuxe passenger car line and was priced at about $700,
depending on the engine selected. Like the rest of the line, power
for the Sedan Delivery came from the either the 60 horsepower,
136cid flathead or the optional 85 horsepower, 221cid, flathead
V-8. Both were mated to a three-speed manual transmission and shaft
drive to the rear wheels. The chassis consisted of a heavily-braced
ladder frame with solid axles front and rear - a sturdy and robust
design. A single transverse leaf spring was fitted up front, while
a pair of longitudinal semi-elliptical leaf springs handled rear
suspension duties. Attractively finished in black, this 1940 Ford
Sedan Delivery is about as elegant as a commercial vehicle is going
to get. With so many '40 Fords being turned into street rods and
customs, it's rare to see a Sedan Delivery that hasn't been
extensively modified or simply driven into the ground as a
commercial workhorse. This appealing driver-quality Ford is
well-detailed overall with excellent black paintwork, well-restored
brightwork, and rolls on red-painted steel wheels fitted with wide
white-wall tires, DeLuxe hubcaps, and trim rings. The cabin is
nicely fitted out with a DeLuxe trim interior, wood-grained
dashboard, and a wooden cargo floor. Tan mottled vinyl covers the
seat, which is in excellent condition, as are the rubber floor
mats, door panels, and kick panels. As nice as the interior is, the
detailing under the hood might be the best part of this restored
Sedan Delivery. Period correct battery, cables, wiring, and clamps
just add to the allure of this charming Ford V8. Appealing to the
enthusiast who prefers to get out and drive, this splendid,
well-presented 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery is sure to turn heads as
well as hearts. Offers welcome and trades considered For additional
