Vehicle Description
1939 Chevrolet Master Sedan
With its wind-swept design and classic good looks, the Chevrolet
Coupe series has always been a rare and highly desirable line of
cars. Not surprisingly, gear heads, customizers and all but 80
years' worth of dedicated fans have elevated it to one of hot
rodding's greatest cultural icons.
Custom built, this 1939 Chevrolet Master street rod is truly
masterful in every way. A very well-built piece in the grand
old-school tradition, it maintains a stock appearance with just the
right exterior touches to suggest there is more at work here than
meets the eye. With a modern drivetrain, an all steel body, heat &
AC, disc brakes all the way around and timeless Art Deco looks,
you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer car for the money.
Exterior
This Chevy's rounded sheet metal was expertly prepared for the
car's 2017 highly polished Laser Red base coat, then clear coat
finish, which is highlighted with all excellent chrome and
brightwork. The curved V styled horizontal chrome ribbed front
grille is flanked by large fender mounted bullet style headlights
and is very representative of the design of this car. In these
prewar years, fenders were still king with the running board
attaching them, but they were beginning to integrate into the body
shell. On the rear we see two horizontal rectangletail lightsthat
are frenched into the smooth lower roll pan. Small bullet style
marker lights sit up high flanking the slowly diminishing and
definitely bumper-less rear trunk area. Chromed bowtie exhaust tips
are looking upward slightly from under the rear roll pan. Beautiful
15-inch polished Billet Specialties front wheels are wrapped by
205/60R15 front tires and more Billet Specialties wheels in the
rear are wrapped by 235/60R15's. From its cloisonne shield style
radiator badge grille to the snazzy chrome tips on the rear this
car is a shining example of the 39 bowtie Master 85.
Interior
Wise Guys provides the front buckets, and these are shown nicely in
tan leather bolsters, and khaki leather tuck and roll inserts. On
the outer sides of these chairs are custom door panels also making
use of the dark and light leather, and the billet cranks, knobs,
and chrome window switches are within this tweed field. In back is
a similar pattern and color and material covered factory bench seat
stretching from side to side. Fronting what is a custom dash, is a
tilt column topped with a rally style Grant steering wheel with a
highly lacqueredwood rim. Gracing the dash is a walnut burl panel
that has a peppering of antique white face VDO gauges with black
numbers and pointers. These gauges have gold bezels and are
frenched into the panel. The remainder of the dash is painted Laser
Red and the speaker grille in the center; another wood panel was
added to house the modern AM/FM stereo. A 12 disc CD changer is
also on board in the trunk. A Vintage Air unit has been added under
the dash to provide year round climate control and on the floors,
which have very nice tan carpeting, is a fire extinguisher and a
small plastic console. Other creature comforts include electric
wipers, a 3rd brake light and 3 point seat belts for the front
seats. A shout out to the headliner which is finished in more khaki
tan and hanging tightly above...Heads up!
Drivetrain
A 350ci big block Chevy V8 with Keith Black pistons and a 280
camshaft has a 4-barrel Holley 625cfm carburetor feeding it and SR
Torquer heads with Crane roller rockers finish off the engine
package. A 700R4 4-speed automatic is on back, along with a rebuilt
in 2019 Lincoln 9-inch 3.50 Trac-Loc rear axle. MSD is in charge of
lighting the fire and a flamed batwing air cleaner allows copious
amounts of air into the mill.
Undercarriage
Looking underneath, we see an absolute and total restoration with
jet black suspension, black steel for the floor pans and rockers,
and a plethora of patina on several surfaces. A nice job under
here. Mustang II provides the front end and leaf spring are on for
the rear suspensions as well as 4-wheel disc brakes for a quick
stop. Our consignor notes that the master cylinder was replaced in
2020, the steering rack and strut rod bushings were replaced in
2021 and the steering shaft U-joints were replaced in 2021 as
well.
Drive-Ability
Just a pleasure to drive as it started immediately, and ran like it
was going out of style, this car steers smoothly, shifts easily,
and gives me a big car ride feel, even though all the while I'm
inside a 2 door. All functions are working swimmingly.
As close to near perfection as we dare go, this Master 85 is truly
standing by its name, masterfully restored, and deluxe in its fit,
finish and power...Mastered with a smile he says.
