Since the company was truly forged from the fires of competition,
the Shelby executive team had a flash of inspiration in 2001. They
envisioned a new racing series built around the CSX4000-series
Shelby Cobras, built at Shelby's Las Vegas facility. These spec
racers would be identically prepared and raced by an all-star list
of veteran drivers, including Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Bob
Bondurant, and more. The Shelby Cobras would be owned by
individuals who would pay for the cars upfront and take delivery
after the racing season, possessing Shelby Cobras with
fresh-from-the-track racing provenance and also perfectly prepped
for SCCA competition.
The Shelby Cobra Challenge Senior Racing Series was announced as a
support series for CART, scheduled to kick off for the 2002 season.
Sometimes, however, even great ideas can't catch a break. As things
turned out, the series never took the green flag. But a handful of
these special Shelby Cobras were built. CSX4257 is one of those
amazing Shelby Challenge Cobras.
Dressed in black and sporting the number 99, Hillbank purchased the
car from the original owner. The new owner of this Shelby Cobra
will find many opportunities for inspiration thanks to the NASCAR
358ci road racing V8 engine by Roush Yates under the hood. A unique
chapter of Shelby's racing history and pure performance come
together in this special Shelby Challenge Cobra.
This is a competition race car that is sold on MSO and is available
for $249,950.
