Vehicle Description
1966 Plymouth Satellite Hardtop
In 1964 Plymouth's designers were being pushed by sales and
marketing to make the cars look as wide as possible. So, it wasn't
too much longer in 1965 that Plymouth unveiled a very large
Plymouth Fury as Chrysler's full-size option. This meant the
Belvedere branding would become the "mid-sized" option. In 1966 the
styling for the Belvedere line was still wide, sleek, and clean.
Plymouth's goal was accomplished and if you were in the market for
a mid-sized vehicle in 1966 it didn't get much better than the
Plymouth Belvedere Satellite.
Gracing our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall in our West
wing is a very special Plymouth Satellite hardtop right out of
1966. With its original 383ci V8 now rebuilt and a restoration
started years ago this car is ready to be driven as is thanks in
part to the redone interior or taken to the next level to become a
real show stopper. Isn't it time you let yourself go Plymouth for
1966?
Exterior
At the front of the body you will find quad headlights within the
grille that is made up of horizontal slats and a central divider.
Below the grille a massive front bumper wraps around the front
nose. At the start of the hood are holes for the hood ornament and
PLYMOUTH badging. At the fenders you'll find the Satellite badging
in chrome leading the way. The beltlineshows holes for the formerly
installed trimmings and down low we see nice and shiny rocker
moldings. The chrome door handles and passenger compartment
stainless look fantastic and show no signs of wear. The rear of the
car is just as sleek as the rest as there are no cutouts for the
horizontal tail lights, only the license plate. An aluminum
PLYMOUTH lettered finish panel graces the base of the trunk lid and
holds the reverse lights. Finishing off the incredible look of this
Satellite is the massive rear bumper and the dual exhausts that
exit underneath it. All bathed in the correct Dark Red Metallic
with a few areas of rust bubbling down low and more rust bubbling
is noted in the drip channels around the roof but otherwise a solid
body. 15-inch Ridler wheels are all around and are wrapped in
staggered width blackwall BF Goodrich rubber.
Interior
Pop open the doors and you'll find a well presenting red vinyl
interior. The interior is extremely spacious and features two front
bucket seats that show no wear and have some Sheridan style
embossing on either side of the inserts. In the back is a bench
with the same styling. In front of the driver's seat is the
original dash that houses the 120mph speedometer within a black
bezel. A black padded topper is up high on the dash and down low is
a chrome strip and a quad of SunPro white face gauges for engine
vital monitoring. In the center on the hump is a chrome armed Hurst
shifter reaching for the driver. A wood rimmed 3 spoke wheel fronts
the dash and a SunPro tachometer has been strapped on for you to
keep an eye on rpms. Above the seats is a tight but lightly soiled
red headliner and down low is like new low pile red carpeting.
Throughout the interior, more chrome Satellite badging can be found
with the red, white, and blue emblem along with it.
Drivetrain
This gleamer is also a screamer in consignor stated rebuilt 383ci
V8 form and has been fitted with newpistons and a .600 lift
camshaft. A single Holley 4-barrel carburetor is atop a Weiand
intake manifold and we note chrome for the valve coverings and
small air cleaner assembly. An A833 4-speed manual transmission is
on back so you can row the gears and our rear axle is 8-3/4
inches.
Undercarriage
An unrestored undercarriage greets us up in the air. A heavy
coating of rustproofing is seen along with some surface rust on the
unibody and flooring. We do note invasive rust on the passengers
torsion bar mount where the bar passes through and we see more
invasive rustnear the rocker where a priorrepair was performed.
Drum brakes are noted all around and upfront a torsion bar
suspension is installed nice and tight and on the back are leaf
springs. Headers bolt to the exhaust which snakes its way rearward
through Flowmaster mufflers and all this black metal.
Drive-Ability
We took great care as this restoration is in process and we faced
some unknowns, so our test drive was mild, but hints of performance
could be felt when we got more gutsy. The brakes, the first thing
we test, performed well with bias free straight stopping. The
handling was on par for a car of the era and the rebuilt 383ci V8
is strong and cruises effortlessly. All interior functions were
working as they should and smiles on both our test driving faces
were ear to ear.
A mostly buttoned up restoration with no stones were left unturned
for the interior, a rebuilt engine and a few cosmetic flaws on the
exterior. A real find and look no further for a better example.
Very original looking and I certainly wouldn't kick it out of bed
for eating crackers!
