Vehicle Description
1977 Cadillac Eldorado Hardtop
... It was long and chrome sittin' in the lot.. Fire engine red,
that thing was hot. He revved it up, she waved goodbye
Love's gone to hell and so have I... Here's to the past they can
kiss my glass, I hope she's happy with him...Here's to the girl,
who wrecked my world, that angel who did me in.
For consignment, peering into the studio, not only did I catch our
industrious-less photog on his phone, but what to my wondering eyes
did I behold? A 1977 Cadillac Eldorado in arrest me Crimson, (maybe
even worse than red?!), with a white padded Landau top and showing
a non verifiable 63,755 miles on the odometer. While the condition
of the car reflects these miles, the title reads 68,100 actual
miles, so there may have been a clerical error at some time in the
past. Plenty of chrome trimmings, straight Detroit iron slabs and
ready to roll in near perfect shape. Look!, down at the end of
Lonely street, the Heartbreak Hotel. And I'm gonna valet it!
Exterior
They say everything is bigger in Texas but I beg to differ as we
only need to visit the East hallway of our Hallowed crowded Halls
here at Classic Auto Mall to find this trinket. And Texas can kiss
my ass! This land yacht is enough to make any Bosun turn crimson
with envy, as it presents in good condition overall. As to the
exterior specifically, I can see a few scratches, chip offs and
faint hints of underlying rust in the seams near the Landau top on
the Crimson painted body. The paint retains its shine, as does all
the chromed trimmings. Firmly planted in 1977 with its square and
rectangle design, it still pulls it off as a stunner and a runner
with the V grille, dual square headlights and intricately designed
bumper framing the bottom of the chin. A loooooong hood leads us to
the windscreen and single w i d e doors for easy access to the back
seat. White Landau padded vinyl on the roof's edge in back,
complete with an opera window inserted frames the back seat. A nice
bump up curve is on the tops of the rear quarters and these flank a
NYC 2 bedroom size trunk. The iconic vertical arrow tail lights
bring up the rear with another large smooth shiny bumper on the
rear roll pan. Large but sleek from the rear view which is just how
I like my asses (of cars!).
Interior
A swing of the safe-like doors and we shake hands with some deep
red vinyl which has been overstuffed, and molded in plastic
accented along with some wood veneer applique to highlight with
some luxury. Stainless steel panels house the toggles and actuator
insert with red carpeting on the bottoms same as the interior
plush, pristine and pretty. I plant my butt on the overstuffed
recliner like living room chairs within this cabin in front. Here
we have wide tuck and roll panels draped in leather that sacrificed
many cows to cover these babies. Throw in some buttons and a
central up and down armrest, and I'm ready for my afternoon nap
after my after-lunch chocolate chip cookie, (call me high
maintenance but I digress...). Noted is NO HUMP as this is a front
wheel drive car, and besides humps are so pedestrian! In the back
is more luxury with a long wide rear bench in the same style as the
front chairs. The front seats are power and our consignor states
the driver's side does not work. Gazing out the panoramic
windscreen then downward my eyes go to the dash which is pure
unadulterated GM styling. Also in padded red with more wood
accenting, we have numerous panels to house nearly every
convenience a car can muster up. This includes climate control,
cruise control, variable wipers, high beams, rear defog, and power
antenna, (a new unit for this is in trunk and not installed). Also
there is a scanning station AM/FM radio, power windows and locks,
with a Motorola MOCOM 70 Scanner radio just below. Above a nice
pleated white very clean headliner is just to show off. This is
just how I like my tops, light and tight, (can I say that? It
appears I just did!)
Drivetrain
As I heave the large hood upward, underneath its revealing an
appropriate 425ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and a TH425 3-speed
automatic on back. There is a 2.75 final drive front axle in, as
the remainder and previously described drivetrain is all factory
stuff. All very clean as well to boot!
Undercarriage
Underneath solid as a rock with no rust just some crimson
overspray, black rustproofing on the stamped floor pans and a
single new muffler in the middle of seemingly nowhere. Providing
the ride is independent torsion bar front suspension, and in back a
4 link with coil springs. Power disc brakes are in all 4 corners.
Just how I like 'em, all over and grabby.
Drive-Ability
Puttin' on the Ritz and one of the plethora of perks I have here at
Classic Auto Mall is to drive each and every one of the
consignments that comes through the door. This one was a pleasure
to do so with all the working conveniences. It took half my drive
just to mess with these, the other half experienced great power,
smooth braking, a cushy ride and even good handling. As noted the
driver's seat did not have the power adjust working, and the power
antenna needs to be installed because the LAST thing I need to be
troubled with is to get out and pull the damn thing skyward.
Sheesh, and now I'm all schweaty, Pete Schweaty you can call
me.(Thx SNL!)
If you want to make a statement, what better way to do so than in
this classic piece of 77 Detroit iron. Bought off an old gentleman
who barely drove it, our consignor sunk some dough into it to have
it pass inspection and do a few upgrades on the way. A wonderful
driver, loaded, and what a statement like "YOU'VE ARRIVED!". It
certainly turns my screws.
