Ford pretty much created an entire new class of motorcar almost overnight half way through the model year in 1964. It was the creation of automotive designer Lee Iaccoca who previously saved the Chrysler corporation from its demise. The Mustang is one of the most amazing automotive success’s of all time. It was targeted towards young affluent clientele that saw their mode of transportation as a representation of their lifestyle, and it was a huge success, selling over a quarter million units by the end of 1964. In 1965, an incredible 524,791 units were sold making Ford an incredible amount of money. The Mustang could be ordered as the stylish around town grocery getter or the powerful sports car with a performance V8 and 4 speed ready for the race track. It is one of the greatest cars ever created.
Over the years since its introduction in 1964 the Mustang has gone through many changes, some for the better and some not so good. The 1970’s was a low point with spinoffs such as the larger bodied Mustangs of the early 1970’s and the Mustang II which was a Mustang really only in name. When the very end of the 1970’s rolled around Ford decided to bring the true mustang back into action so in 1979 the “Fox Body” or the real 3rd generation was born and it was a great move. They were small, nimble and sporty and did a good job of representing what the Mustang was originally intended for. It proved so popular that this design, with a few changes as it progressed of course, was used by Ford until 1993 when the Mustang was again completely redesigned.
