Vehicle Description
1966 Chevrolet Malibu Hardtop
Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle/Malibu
is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to
perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands
in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body
styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which
ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom
built' nature that defines the muscle car era.
For consignment, an always garage kept 1966 Chevrolet Malibu
in...hold onto your hats, nearly stock form. This fine example has
managed to survive over 56 years without ever going under the knife
and being transformed into a SS clone and becoming just another
pretty face in the crowd. Our consignor states that this is the
original 230ci engine and Powerglide transmission, along with the
original interior other than the lower front seat cushion, a single
respray, and 46,553 original miles, although the title reads exempt
due to age. An all buttoned up and well preserved lightblue over
blue package and ready for you to enjoy.
Exterior
A single respray in Mist Blue, the original paint color with only a
few minor flaws in the form of scuffs and chips covers all the
sheet metal this car was born with. Nicely preserved chrome and
trim very shiny and mirror-like is noted on the bumpers and
optional bumper guards and all trim is present and accounted for.
The deep B pillars frame the trunk and the rear window which is
clean and rust free. On the rear of this car are corner wrap-around
taillights that have a Mist Blue panel in between them which floats
above the bumper. 4 14-inch steel wheels with Chevrolet wheel
covers are on all 4 corners and are wrapped in thin white wall
tires.
Interior
A swing of the door and we are met with a blue vinyl door panel
fashioned with a horizontal tuck and roll pattern, a small arm rest
and a chrome window crank and handle. Dark blue plastic down below
and Mist Blue upper sills complete the package on the doors. A long
blue split bench glides between the steel doors, in the original
Renville cloth and vinyl which is showing no tears or excessive
wear, but we do note that the lower cushion has been refinished in
a non original tuck and roll vinyl. The rear bench follows suit in
the correct material and we note some soiling and color fade on
both the front and rear benches. An original GM inverted V style
dash is up front and has the speedometer, fuel gauge, and clock
inserted in an area with textured black plastic above, and Mist
Blue metal below. The original AM radio sits in the middle of the
dash above the heater control which leads back to the original
heater box. Clean but slightly faded blue carpeting covers the
floors and is protected by non-original black carpeted floor mats
while a light blue headliner hangs tightly above.
Drivetrain
A correct and original 230ci inline 6 cylinder is within an
unrestored and lightly patinaed engine bay. Complete with an orange
Chevrolet block and head and topped with a 1bbl carburetor this
mill is looking almost as good as the day it was built. On the back
is a correct Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission and a
10-bolt rear axle with a CA coded 3.08 conventional unit rounds out
the drivetrain department.
Undercarriage
A solid steel frame gives the backbone to the rust-free floors, all
of which showing with surface rust, undercoating and black paint.
Independent coil springs are on the front and a 4 link with coil
springs round out the suspension. Power drum brakes are noted on
all 4 corners as is power steering to make driving a breeze. A
single exhaust system with a stock style muffler sends spent
fossils to the rear of the car.
Drive-Ability
This car started quickly and ran nicely. All functions worked well,
and it has great acceleration and handling. The interior had plenty
of room, was definitely comfortable and was a trip back in time
with all the originality.
Well preserved with plenty of care taken throughout the years by
loving owners and now gracing our North Mallway here at the Classic
Auto Mall. Essentially unmolested and never under the knife of a
hotrodder, from our Hallowed Halls to your garage this car is
definitely worth a look, and a really great year for the iconic
Malibu.
