1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce in Amelia Island, FL
The massively popular Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint coupe of 1954 was
soon joined by a Spider version designed and built by Pininfarina,
echoing the lines of the Lancia Aurelia Spider and Ferrari 250 GT
California Spyder. A true 'do it all' classic roadster, Giulietta
Spiders are highly sought after for their uninhibited access to the
1.3-liter four-cylinder engine's fizzy exhaust note - the
high-performance Spider Veloce made even more desirable by the
presence of dual Weber carburetors, a cold-air intake, and
higher-compression pistons among other changes.
This exceptional Giulietta Spider Veloce, unofficially designated
as an 'interim car' by connoisseurs for its mixture of Tipo 750 and
Tipo 101 features, was built in Turin, Italy in 1961. As such,
chassis number AR169000 was constructed on a long wheelbase Tipo
101 chassis with revised bodywork, but retained the 1300 cc engine
of the earlier Tipo 750 Giuliettas. The Spider was first registered
on 21 March 1961, and its history since has been recorded in a
comprehensive history file that is available for review. This
includes identification cards from the CSAI (Commissione Sportiva
Automobilistica Italiana) and the FIA dated 1987 and 22 February
1989 respectively, authenticating AR169000 as a genuine Spider
Veloce retaining a correct-specification engine, transmission,
suspension, and bodywork at the time of the inspections. Entering
the prestigious fleet of the Historic Endurance Rallying
Organisation (HERO Events) in 2011, the Alfa was a regular entrant
at historic rally events from the time it was acquired until
2018.
After almost a decade of regular use, the renowned experts at
Classic Performance Engineering were entrusted with conducting a
full engine strip and rebuild. Simultaneously, AR169000 underwent a
full nut-and-bolt restoration in the workshop of DTR European
Sports Cars beginning in 2018 and concluding in the early part of
2022. The aluminum body was refinished in elegant dark blue, and
the exceedingly rare original hard top in the contrasting white it
is presented in today. The interior, now fitted with sporting
bucket seats, is trimmed in burgundy leather. Further improvements
included a limited-slip differential, performance air-cooled drum
brakes, and upgraded suspension components on all four corners.
Detailed invoices paint a picture of the restoration's vast scope
and exceed £150,000 in total. Following a 'shake down' test at the
ACE in Motion Tour in June 2022, the Spider was treated to a full
paint correction and ceramic coating to ensure the car's paintwork
was in line with the high standard of the restoration. Should its
new custodian wish to enter the numerous road rally events for
which it is eligible, they can rest assured that this
concours-level restoration is better prepared than ever to eat up
the miles on long-distance journeys. Complete with extensive
documentation, this beautifully restored Giulietta Spider Veloce is
sure to satisfy even the most selective Alfa Romeo collector.
