Vehicle Description

1928 Packard 443 5-Passenger Phaeton.

Located near PORTLAND, OREGON.

Chassis #231853.
Engine # 228786A.

According to the data plate on the firewall, this Packard 443 5-Passenger Phaeton was delivered on June 15, 1928 in Lackawanna, New York. While the original owner is unknown, by the 1940's it had been relegated to a scrap yard in Massachusetts where it was discovered by Henry Yeska, Sr. of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Later, Yeska would be known as one of the leading sources for parts for mid-late 1920's Packards until his passing in 2014. Henry kept this car stored until 1979 when he set out on a full restoration over the next 8 years. It was a down-to-bare-metal, nothing-left-untouched project that was completed in 1987. The results were stunning and remain so today. Purchased from Yeska by the current owner in Oregon in 2006.

Body is correctly painted in authenic Packard factory combination of "Chicle Drab" (an olive/tan) below the beltline with top of hood and above beltline areas finished in "Arabian Mocha" (warm brown) with black fenders. The beltline monogram panel is framed with black over the "Devonshire Cream" (a deep orange/yellow) panel with "Casino Red" pinstriping. It is an absolute knockout. The colors are elegant, yet sporty. The condition of the paint today is excellent, with no chipping, crazing or damage noted. It still presents as a very fresh restoration, testament to the care it has received over the years.

The plating is excellent, with a combination of nickel and chrome (1928 was the first year that chrome plating was used on some parts.) The disc wheels (including the two sidemounted spares) are chrome plated and show beautifully. Wrapped with 32 x 6.75 Lester bias-ply whitewalls. Drum headlights. Dual Trippe driving lights. Spotlight on the driver's side window post. The running boards and driver's compartment floor are covered in linoleum, which is in excellent condition. Rear compartment finished with tan wool carpet, also excellent.

The interior is gorgeous. Seats and door panels upholstered in saddle tan leather. No rips, tears or damage. Beautifully finished wood steering wheel. Woodgrained metal dashboard and garnish moldings. Instrument panel is finished in tooled leather. All glass is excellent. Storage compartments in the back of the front seat. Vintage "JH" accessory folding rear windshield is excellent. Refinished wood top bows. Tan Haartz cloth top in excellent condition. Trunk rack with fitted trunk. Undercarriage restored, clean and rust-free (was not detailed in the photos.) "Goddess of Speed" radiator mascot.

Mechanically excellent. Rebuilt 384 cubic inch L-Head 8 cylinder engine. Rated at 109 horsepower. Fuel supplied by vacuum tank. Ths car starts easily, idles smoothly and runs without fault. Plenty of power. 3-speed manual transmission shifts crisply. 4.07:1 rear-end gearing means it's comfortable at higher speeds. Brakes stop smooth and straight. This car was toured by the current owner without incident and has been a pleasure to drive.

PLEASE SEE VIDEO OF ENGINE RUNNING.

Following completion of the restoration in 1988, this car received a National First Place in its first Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) showing in Downington, PA. It later received its AACA Senior Award in a subsequent showing at the 1988 Fall Meet in Charlotte, NC. More recently with the current owner, in 2018 it received a Special Class Award at the Forest Grove, Oregon Concours d'Elegance, one of the oldest concours on the west coast. It continiues to show beautifully today and would be welcome at any judged meet or show, including Classic Car Club of America, The Packard Club and Packards International.

If you are looking for a magnificently restored, turn-key Packard in a rare and impressive body style (1 of approximately 7 known to exist today on the 143" wheelbase), this is it.

WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BUYERS WORLDWIDE AND CAN ASSIST WITH SHIPPING ANYWHERE.
