Vehicle Description
1954 Ford Customline Fordor
1950 marked the 50th Anniversary of Ford. The Ford Customline
became Ford Motors medium priced variant of the passenger car
lineup. It featured a wraparound windshield, curved rear glass and
the "slab sides" which gave the model a more modern appearance. The
Customline was available in 9 different models including two-door,
station wagon, convertible, sedan and sedan delivery.
Offered for consignment and your viewing pleasure, a 1954 Ford
Customline Fordor sedan. In two tone Sky Haze Green and white, a
mere 81,080 title verified actual miles, plenty of chrome trimmings
and this car has a nice overall interior showing that it has had a
good life, and has been well kept. A well preserved car that drives
near perfectly and is thoroughly looking showroom fresh.
Exterior
Sky Haze Green, a rarely seen 1954 color, covers the straight steel
panels of this car that have well minded gaps and presents in a
deep end of the pool finish. A few inclusions are present in the
paint, however one must look carefully to realize the flaws. From
its neatly designed big 1950's front grille with mirror like chrome
to the big side trim spear that starts just aft of the headlights
and goes to the back of the forward door and continues to the rear
door with a bump-down following the slightly pontooned lower rear
quarter panel. The spear continues rearward, following the beltline
and diminishing to a point just ahead of the tail lights. A chrome
and red V8 and Y emblem graces the front fenders and just below the
rear door spear we see Customline in your grandmother's script.
Plenty of chrome trimmings for the window surrounds and a single
round tail light with a round chrome bezel and small raised center
rest on the end of the fender which has rounded tops to meet the
taillights. I sense the "jet age" coming on here. Sky Haze Green
wheels with FORD badged chrome caps are wrapped in wide white
radial tires on all 4 corners. The roof of the car adds a
contrasting crisp clean white and is bathed in that color.
Interior
The door panels utilize a myriad of materials from smooth dark
green vinyl to gray and green plaid checked broadcloth and even
some dark green painted metal, which all work together to form the
door panels. Wide long benches are the passengers seating front and
rear, and these are covered with gray and green plaid checked
broadcloth inserts with dark green piping and vinyl bolsters. Some
wrinkling of the lower front seat cushion is noted but no tears are
seen and a sprawling bench in the rear emulates the front. A warm
dark green metal dash, and original instrumentation are seen
inside. The horseshoe speedometer and gauge cluster are in front of
the original steering wheel in black. A machine turned insert races
across the lower dash front and holds the chrome trimmed push
button AM radio, temp controls are noted on this dash and a small
clock is inserted to the right. The original mohair headliner in
light green and dark green vinyl sun visors are above and dark
green carpeting in very nice condition is on the floors.
Drivetrain
Powered by the 239ci Y block V8, the mill provides 130hp and
resides within a highly detailed engine bay. Soft creamy white
covers the block, heads and intake and contrasting orange is on for
the valve covers and oil bath air cleaner assembly. There is a
2-barrel carburetor atop, and a 3-speed manual transmission on back
with a 3.90 geared rear axle. Overall a beautifully detailed and
well mainted drivetrain.
Undercarriage
Some slight patina is seen underneath with minor surface rust on
the frame and suspension and other untreated components. The floor
pans and rockers are thoroughly covered with undercoating which is
nice and black. Independent coil spring suspension for the front
and leaf springs for the rear, and drum brakes on all 4 corners. A
surface rusted single exhaust system is on for the exhale.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good driver with all functions working. Smooth
acceleration and the transmission worked easily with the clutch. A
good overall ride.
A great opportunity to own a truly unmolested 50's classic probably
restored at one point for the exterior, interior looking good and
using many materials. Original engine and engine bay, and a nicely
preserved look which does not have any more need to be redone.
