Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Tribute
The Camaro, manufactured by Chevrolet, was hardly a new idea; more
like a hurried attempt to keep up with the recently
launched/remarkably successful Ford Mustang. It started as a pony
car, but later introduced muscle car versions in the market.
Launched on 29 September, 1966, the Camaro comes in five distinct
generations, with the last one being introduced on 16 March,
2009.
For consignment an SS tribute which started out life as an original
V8 2 door hardtop sport coupe. It now has a 350ci engine, SS
badging throughout, is red and sports wide white dual stripes. The
car is very clean and ready to boogity, boogity, boogity.
Exterior
Our tribute has the blackened grille with a single headlight, (not
hidden like the RS),on either side and an SS badge in the center.
Bolero Red paint is evident and well applied to the straight steel
of this car with well minded gaps. A dual wide white stripe runs
the gamut of this car save for the roof and with the 15-inch rally
wheels with deep dish trimmings on their edges and raised white
letter tires a bit of lifted stance, and she's a beaut, Clark. Nice
chrome trimmings are throughout, and shiny thin bumpers upfront and
in the rear with both a lower black chin spoiler in the front and a
ducktail style spoiler atop the trunk lid. On back below the
horizontal tail lights on the upper rear roll pan dual shiny
exhaust peek out from under on either side.
Interior
A sleekly designed black vinyl covered door panels lead us into the
passenger compartment of the car. The vinyl has upper horizontal
tuck and roll and otherwise smooth uppers and lowers. A nice
armrest is on and chromed actuators and cranks are also in. Two
thin trim delineators work to keep the different surfaces apart.
Inside we are placing our bodies on to high back thin design
"Strato" buckets with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters. A
center console races through the buckets and has some wood applique
but is otherwise black covered vinyl. The shifter is a 747 throttle
style dual post with horizontal bar shifter. Upfront the original
dash is in and some extra gauges have been added in. A column
mounted tachometer and a trio of extra gauges below the center
floating above the nice black carpeting throughout. The raked in
dash design houses the original deep inset factory gauges and some
eyeball heater vents. An aftermarket radio is in and it appears as
though a new dash top has been also installed. In back is a long
bench seat presenting nicely and looking good.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in a very clean engine bay, is a 350ci V8 engine. It
is well appointed with headers, a Flowmaster exhaust, an Edelbrock
intake and 4-barrel carburetor. A TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission on back. The rear axle is a 12 bolt 3.73 geared and
Positraction equipped. The engine also has cast ribbed valve
coverings and like new wiring and hoses throughout.
Undercarriage
Virtually showroom with no rust or even road dirt. Just nicely
painted black suspension which is independent coil springs up
front, and leaf springs for the back. A new fuel tank is in, and
all else for the stamped floor pans and toe kicks are near
perfection under this car. Power disc braking is on front and power
drums for the back. The dual H pipe Flowmaster exhaust is looking
like new and showing just a slight bit of rust on some seams.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and great powerful accelerator and runner. It can
cruise all day at highway speeds and the ride is nice. It has power
steering to make it easier, and braking was panic stop bias free.
All functions were working at the time of the test drive.
A nicely done project taking an ordinary Camaro grocery getter
sport coupe and moving it up the ladder to an SS tribute. Very racy
and its stance is just fab!
