Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet K-30 Silverado 4x4 Pickup
While relatively straight-lined and boxy in appearance, (leading to
their "Square-body" nickname from the public), the Rounded Line
trucks were the first generation of the C/K to be designed with the
use of computers and wind tunnels, optimizing the exterior shape
for lower drag and improved fuel economy. The chassis was an
all-new design, (with all trucks receiving a leaf-spring rear
suspension); K-Series trucks moved to all-wheel drive with
shift-on-the-fly 4x4 being introduced for 1981.
For consignment, a "square body" GM labeled "rounded design" pickup
truck with a K designation. This means it's a 4x4, and our model
shown here was born in Janesville, WI and spent much of its life in
sunny California before relocating to the dry Arizona climate where
our lucky consignor was able to purchase it. A special order truck,
loaded with nearly every option, has never had any rust and is
wearing a single repaint done in 2018. It has been garage kept, has
dual rear wheels and a powerful 454ci V8. The overall winner for
the restored class of 1979-1987 trucks at Carlisle in 2019, and
still looking like a show winner today. Classic Trucks are hot
right now and we see a trend for owners to use them as a
promotional piece for their businesses. A little promotion won't
hurt will it? Also it has the ability to get a little mud on the
tires while hauling the goods.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Square and rectangle design abound right upfront with the
horizontal egg crate grille flanked by stacked headlights and turn
signals in square and rectangle form. A big bumper protects the
front and a nice bowtie badge sits in the center. All original
steel with well minded gaps is bathed in a single respray of the
factory Apple Red that was applied in 2018 and is still showing
very well. Two doors, a shiny large mirror hanging from either side
and all correct badging. Window trimmings are blackened and lightly
smoked glass makes up the factory sliding rear window. The bed has
a liner which shows in good condition having limited usage.
Speaking of the bed, on the outsides are factory flares for the
dual rear wheels, giving this hauler a big rig look. On the back is
a solid gate and shiny bumper which has the tail lights floating
off of each side of the box. The cab roof has been fitted from the
factory with amber clearance lights adding to the rig styling.
Polished and drilled 16-inch wheels with manual front hub lockouts
are on all 4 corners, and wrapped with 235/85R16 all weathers with
a 30th week of 2018 manufacture date.
Interior
All original in Silverado trimming, showing chrome toggles for the
power windows and lock, and all bathed in gray molded vinyl, cloth
and carpet with just a hint of brushed stainless and chrome for the
dress up, all which shows nicely and this is just the door panels.
The gray cloth and vinyl bench has light gray tuck and roll fuzzy
broadcloth inserts and smooth dark gray bolsters and appears as
nearly new. The standard dash is within along with the Silverado
trim stippled brushed aluminum molded panel for the extra gauges
available on this particular dash. An aftermarket 3 spoke billet
steering wheel sits atop a tilt column and fronts this dash which
has a Kenwood AM/FM/CD radio just below the slides for the heater
and AC. Dash central holds the ash tray and toggle for the dual
fuel tanks within the lower red steel framing and up top is a dark
gray padded topper that remains crack free. Charcoal gray carpeting
floods the floors and the shifter for the 4-speed manual
transmission and 4x4 shifter resides on the hump. Above is a felted
gray headliner that remains nice and tight and lest we forget the
twin gun rack mounted inside the back of the cab.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in an unrestored original engine bay it shows some
slight age wear, but is still buttoned up. It has the factory
installed 454ci V8 with a single 4 barrel carburetor feeding it. On
the back is the correct 4-speed manual transmission. This pushes
power rearward to a 4.10 geared Dana 60 rear and with a twist of
the hubs and a pull of a lever power also goes to the Dana front
axle as well. Fab!
Undercarriage
Like the engine bay, original with some surface rust on the
horizontal struts which support the floorboards and on the leaf
springs. Road dirt, and some chip off undercoated pointing abound.
Headers feed spent fossils rearward and through a dual Turbo
muffler equipped exhaust. We note the absence of the catalytic
converter but our consignor notes that all associated smog
equipment is included with your purchase. Leaf springs are all
around for the heavy duty ride and power disc braking is on front,
and power drums for the rear.
Drive-Ability
As expected this truck came right to life and was hitting on all 8
cylinders right out of the gate. We were off and it drives
beautifully, switches seamlessly into 4x4 mode, and handles nicely
for a heavy duty truck. Brakes are solid, and all was fun working
4x4 order.
A great example from 1986, all original steel for the body, a
single repaint, fully loaded and the original engine and
transmission. A former California truck with like new tires
wrapping shiny wheels. A classic 4x4 pickup here ready for
service.
