Vehicle Description
1978 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Sedan
Luxurious and economical this car was touted as, and we were right
the middle of the gas and emissions crisis, and marketers were
scrambling prior to cars just getting smaller and more efficient.
The old guard was hard to break, but it left us with large pieces
of Detroit Iron to have as classic collectables.
For consignment, we give you the 1978 version of the Regency Olds
98. Up until 2 months ago it lived in the same garage since new. It
has a spectacularly preserved leather interior, and the exterior is
all original. A mere 60,934 title verified actual miles clocked on
her and she sports new rubber from this year.
Exterior
Nice straight original paint body panels are on this car and
minding their gaps nicely. They are bathed in Dark Carmine Red
Metallic and its original paint. A matching vinyl padded top is on,
and adding to the luxurious look. Squares and rectangles abound in
the design including the headlights, grille door panels and back of
the car. Plenty of extra chromed trimmings are on including the
central thin spear, and wide lower rocker panels covering. The
windows are surrounded by chrome, as are the bumpers as well as all
head, and tail lighting having it too. 4 doors allow easy access to
the cabin, an a trunk which is now like a NYC 2 BR apartment in the
back. Flat dish wheel coverings with some shiny trim rings are
wrapped in 225/70R15's in thin whitewall form, from the 24th week
of 2022 mfg date.
Interior
As noted, a beautifully preserved interior and just the door panels
give you a hint that you're in for a treat. Here we swing open to
saddle brown textured leather and it's all padded. It mixes with 3D
wood applique, buttons and some lower gold carpeting to make up the
convenience loaded doors. Power locks, power windows and a mirror
joystick are seen along with a courtesy light and padded armrest
seamlessly built into the armrest control panels. The seats, or
should I say overstuffed chairs, are covered in the saddle leather,
have buttons and tufts and a central armrest which folds up and
down. The rear bench is equally impressive and is uninterrupted and
seats 3 very comfortably. Gold carpeting floods the floors and up
front a square and rectangle dash uses gold accenting, wood
applique and black faced instrumentation for its visual
presentation. Peppered within the burl dash wood applique is a
plethora of conveniences to keep things inside just right baby
bear! The headliner is nice and tight, and all leather is excellent
inside.
Drivetrain
Under that long hood is just as impressive for the engine bay as
the interior, where I see to my wondering eyes a factory Olds 350ci
V8 topped with a single 4bbl carb, and backed by a TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission. Way back a 10 bolt 2.41 geared rear axle.
Stock exhaust is on and all is rust free and corrosion free for
this unmolested factory installed mill.
Undercarriage
Upon the lift we note a smattering off surface rust, but none
invasive...it's coming through the rust proofing but remains in
check. The floor pans have no rust and the surrounding framing
sports some of the surface rust but all unremarkable. Independent
coil springs are in front and a 4 link with coil springs are on
back. Power brakes are all around with discs in front and drums for
the back.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and slipping inside definitely puts you in the lap
of luxury. Even though the car is smaller there is plenty of space
inside. Here it ran beautifully on the track, handled nicely, has
bias free braking on the panic stop, and sooth automatic shifting.
All functions were working on the test drive save for the AC not
blowing cold and the fuel gauge not reading the fuel level.
One owner up till about 6 months ago, same garage, same maintenance
fastidiousness, same paint and original factory engine. Impressive
leather interior, and runs like a 1978 champ.
