Vehicle Description
1998 Dodge Dakota Pickup
Sales brochures at dealerships touted the RAM toughness, load
handling longevity/long haul durability, and reading their copy,
one would think these trucks would be around forever. And alas some
still are!
For consignment, a Dodge Dakota in standard cab format with a 3.9
Liter V6 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Let's
call this a budget friendly sport truck capable of generating
plenty of thrills without emptying your savings account. A full on
adjustable air ride suspension, billet Centerline Galaxy wheel, and
not cut up as most mini-trucks usually are, you could even drive
thisraspberry dreamsicle daily if you so chose. A Dakota is the
only truck that truly drives like a sports car. This is largely due
to its smaller size, as a full-size pickup is simply too large to
experience a similar feel.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
A raspberry in the wild if you will, and then some, we are graced
with this Dakota in our presence. Originally finished in DX8 black,
a raspberry wrap has been installed on all panels save for the
roof. Our consignor notes this color as Furious Fuchsia, but I can
assure you the color is a few shades off. This is not just your run
of the mill truck either, as it has a custom mesh Street Scene
grille installed and with its Freightliner front end, a cowl
induction style scooped hood is flanked by large front quarters and
a big R/T style Street Scene bumper below, giving it plenty of
bulk. Lightly smoked glass for the cab with black trimmings and a
factory painted black roof provides some contrast. On the back, a
simple black bed shows well with only minor scars from usage and
holds the pump and compressor for the infinitelyadjustable air
ride. The rear bumper has been shaved for a cleaner look, and Euro
style tail lights have been added. The tailgate has also been
shaved of it's handle, and it can be actuated from the interior.
17-inch Billet Centerline Galaxy wheels are all around and wrapped
in like new rubber.
Interior
Clean gray cloth covers the buckets and some of the door panels. An
original dash is up front, and a leather wrapped steering wheel is
in front of the dash with a Ram branded airbag in the center. Door
panels are mostly clean, and we see manual windows and locks.
Filling out the dash are the factory instruments along with the
dials for the heater and working AC along with an aftermarket JVC
AM/FM/CD stereo. Clean gray carpet is reserved for the floors and a
fuzzy gray headliner with a working courtesy light is above. 3
toggles are mounted down low on the driver's side of the dash and
control the power to the air compressor and one each for the front
and rear adjustable air height control.
Drivetrain
3.9 liters of power is under the hood and this produces 175hp.
Electronic fuel injection with a cold air intake is on top, and a
4-speed automatic, (46RE), is on back. 3.55 Positraction gears are
reserved for the rear axle. All is in excellent mechanical
condition.
Undercarriage
Peering underneath we see some surface rust on the usual suspects,
but all solid and structurally sound. Power disc brakes are on
front, and power drums for the rear, and a Flowmaster exhaust sans
the catalytic converter is now installed. Providing the ride is an
independent front suspension with air bags and DJM control arms,
and in the rear are leaf springs, lowering blocks, and air
bags.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, this truck really does handle like a sports car.
It's lower to the ground than the standard offerings in the pickup
genre, and it helps a lot. Good smooth acceleration and shifting,
and a nice quiet comfortable cruise at highway speed. All functions
were working just perfectly.
A beautiful raspberry magenta wrap on an uncut example with some
Street Scene add ons to add even more to its already sporty looks.
Couple in straight steel, a clean interior and being fully
functional and you cannot go wrong. A hauler that is also a perfect
throwback to the mini-truck craze of the late 90's and early 2000's
that definitely will open some admiring eyes!
