Vehicle Description
1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1
In October of 1947 test pilot Chuck Yeager accomplished something
widely thought to be impossible due to an aircraft not being able
to withstand the shock when it happens. He proved them wrong by
breaking the sound barrier, (Mach 1), on October 14, 1947. At the
altitude he was, he had to be going over 662 MPH.
Fast forward to 1971 and we give you, our newest Mustang
consignment and benefitting from a complete restoration in the
2010-2011 era, a frame up restored body, and Cleveland engine
powered Mach 1. A little overbore on the engine, (.010 over), a
rebuilt C6 transmission, and new pumpkin and donning a respray in
6F Gold Glow, and we are soon to create our own sonic boom. ( Await
the test drive!!)
Exterior
6F, Gold Glow sounds like I may need a cigarette as I bask in the
afterglow of this respray color. A color which was available on
'72-'73 cars, and looking fast. With the addition of some satin
black surrounding the dual front hood scoops, chin spoiler and
triple threat stripe which begins in the lower front quarter, rises
to just above the front wheel well, then races rearward at the
midline to the back of the car. The 1971 front grille is the most
menacing of all the Mustangs, and has been emulated even in newer
versions of this moniker. A black rocker painted area is on the
bottoms and is bordered on top of it by a chromed thin trimming.
Mach 1 large badging is also in the black on the front quarters.
The true definition of a "pony" car, with its miles long hood area,
and small gracefully descending rakish rear deck. This is topped by
a black rear spoiler, and underneath the spoiler we see the triple
brake lights bordered by another thinner triple black stripe above
and a clean bumper below. 14-inch factory Ford aluminum slots are
in front and 15-inch Cragars slots in polished chrome are wrapped
by BFG raised white lettered Radial T/A's on all 4 corners.
Beautifully done replacing any previously rusted panels, with new
panels all Z chromed, (rust preventative), then painted.
Interior
Turning our attention to the interior, correct high back black
knitted vinyl buckets sporting some horizontal tuck and roll
inserts with gray geometric accenting stitched in are in front, and
a 2+2 fold down seat in the rear. The front seats have all new seat
foams. Running between the buckets, and to the dash is a high
central console sporting a glovebox/armrest, shift lever, a
chronograph clock and up to the dash where the temp sliders and
MUSTANG badged AM/FM radio reside. Just above in the faux woodgrain
applique panel on top are a trio of round deep gauges which use the
rake of the central dash to emphasize their shape with their
bezels. The instrumentation in the drivers center eye view, also
uses the rake and are deeply inset into the dash with their black
faces and white letters. The dash has a new pad on top, and there
are all new gauges matching the originals in this dash. A sporty
presentation to say the least. Black carpeting with some gold
stitched MACH 1 floor mats are in and above is a tight black
headliner.
Drivetrain
A bathed in Ford blue, a Cleveland 351ci 4V V8 bored .010 over and
was balanced, fits under this long hood. The mill is the consignor
stated original to the car and has a ram air gasket on top of the
blue painted air cleaner covering that fits into the above
corresponding hood scoop. This beautiful mill has a Summit Racing
4-barrel carburetor on top. Strapped to the back is a 3-speed
automatic C6 tranny which has been completely rebuilt and has a
2500rpm stall converter on. On the rear is a rebuilt Ford 9-inch
pumpkin and TracLoc and 3.50 gears, which replaces the lesser 2.79
gears and conventional axle . Noted that rear axle bearings and
seals have all also been replaced.
Undercarriage
All cleaned up and spit shined during the restoration, we now see a
rust free environment. This entire environment was blasted, painted
with POR-15 after and then painted with semi gloss black so it
looks better than factory. Floor pans are nice and like new, and
the rockers have no rust. New upper ball joints, control arms and
lower ball joints are on and a new rear factory sway bar. The front
suspension is independent coil spring and rear is leaf springs with
traction bars. New power front disc braking with all new
components, and supporting brake lines and a new master cylinder
compliment the new rear drum brakes. In back is a new fuel tank and
sending unit, and a dual Flowmaster exhaust helps with the
exhale.
Drive-Ability
This early 1970's rocket ship fired right up, and we have liftoff!
Plenty of power, nice handling, and a comfortable interior to boot.
It shifted smoothly, and all interior functions were go. Mmmmmmmm
now for my cigarette!.. Wait I need to finish up..this
description!
Nicely restored with many new parts and rebuilt everything else,
now yields a great example from 1971 which in this writer's mind is
the Mustang's greatest design years. All you need to do now is
"pony" up the dough and you can drive it right out of here....BOOM!
There goes that sound barrier again...
