Vehicle Description
1966 Chevrolet Impala SS
In celebration of their 50th year of production, Chevrolet
introduced the Impala. Designs were changing, moving away from
traditional tail fins being replaced by deep sculpted rear panels,
dual headlamps, larger "greenhouse" passenger compartments, and
upgrades in suspension and engine options. Interior finishes such
as color keyed door panels, and brushed aluminum began at this time
as well. Through generations 1 to 3, styling got sleeker, passenger
compartments lower, and emphasis was on a look of a car in motion,
even when it was sitting still.
Flashy muscle cars are fun, and polished customs are nice, but for
some folks, there's nothing better than a well-done cruiser. No
gimmicks, no frills and no drama; just sun and fun - LOTS of fun.
This exceptionally clean Impala is a classy stunner that has been
in the capable hands of our current consignor who kept the good
respray, but put a new interior inside. It sports a strong 454
cubes and no rust for this all steel slabbed side and topped bowtie
from 1966. When I was 17 it was a very good year....
Exterior
Ridding itself of any rust that might have been on this car, it is
now long gone, and never really was on this California built Impala
trimmed bowtie. Dark Danube Blue with a glass-like finish is seen
all over this car. Wonderful script style badging is seen on the
front quarters, and on all 4 corners are great looking deep dish
and chrome trimmed rally wheels. The wheel well trimmings, a trim
spear, and rocker trimming are also adding contrast to the deep end
of the pool blue. On back in typical Impala styling the triple tail
lights are remaining but are now within a single horizontal light
with 3 panels format and wrapping around the rear quarters. A dual
exhaust protrudes from the rear of this car, and produces a
wonderful sound when the accelerator is pressed in the downward
direction.
Interior
New jet black vinyl in bucket form, and a rear bench in the same,
make up the newly restored original interior. Straight and true GM
square and rectangle dash and instrumentation and plentiful use of
ribbed aluminum makes up the center console and dash lower strip.
Here on the console it shows a storage glovebox, and the Hurst
white ball topped shifter. As it rises more gauges in a 4 cluster,
temp sliders, and the radio is above all this gauge menagerie all
in dash central. 2 aftermarket gauges are under the dash and these
function as replacements for the 2 in dash central that are
currently inoperable. Nice extremely clean black loop carpeting is
flooding the floors and above is a black stitched panel smooth
headliner.
Drivetrain
Nowappearing on stage under the hood, is a BIG 454ci V8 ca.
1973-1990. On top is an Edelbrock Intake and a Holley 750cfm double
pumper 4bbl carburetor. On the back, it's a correct Muncie tranny
which is a 4-speed manual M20 edition. The rear axle weighs in at a
12 bolt 3.31 conventional from the factory. Headers are on and all
is just beautifully finished under this hood all shiny and deep
black paint.
Undercarriage
A new perfect fuel tank is now installed, and we note some surface
rusted and patinaed stamped floor pans, although very structurally
sound. The pumpkin, exhaust and suspension are all painted in nice
black. Independent coil sprung front, and a 4 link with coil
springs on the back suspension provides the cruiser ride. Drum
braking is on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
I snuck inside this car to beast without my bowtie obsessed
salesman cohort who likes to drive cars but never really shares any
info on them, almost like he does not know, nor wants to. It
accelerated to beat the band, has solid bias free braking, and
steering and ride wear smoooooooth? All functions were working
swimmingly!
A fine example looking much like it's off the showroom in 1966, but
alas is present day. A very clean car, a very BIG engine, one could
say big hat and lots of cattle for this bowtie. Turn the key and go
and show, meanwhile you're not wrenchin
