In early 1963 a team of engineers and designers got together at
Pontiac, and decided to focus more on street racing and power. The
Tempest had been in production for a bit, and a more "muscular"
powerful car was needed. Hence the acronym GTO or Grand Tempest
Option became the code for the secret new development that would
take place. John DeLorean actually claims the GTO came from the
Italian Gran Turismo Omologato or Grand Touring Homologated
(certified) which in reality the car was never meant for grand
touring, but to be the fastest straight line Pontiac produced.
Presenting in near showroom condition, this low mileage (61,557)V8
LS2 mill optioned car which pumps out 400hp and a sought after
version is ready to humiliate others, and smoke out the masses.
Some upgrades to sugarcoat the deal even further, make this
consignment a great little piece of automotive candy for someone
who has a sweet tooth for this kind of bear exterior and leather
interior muscle.
Exterior
Just a black blur can be seen when this car blows by you. The paint
is very nice, with just a few obstacles from normal road usage,
some bondo in the driver's rear wrap around rear bumper side wheel
well, and drivers side rocker has a slight cracking of the paint. A
SLP urethane chin spoiler/splitter adds some looks, and protects
the front bumper from parking curb rash. Smooth aero European
inspired headlights wrap the front and quarters and from the top
center front wheel well there is a snazzy broken up into squares
and rectangles, painted white "trim spear" if you will. Below on
the beltline, a red and white trimming also runs the length. On the
back is a beautifully sculpted spoiler on top of the trunk lid, and
just below more euro aero wrap around tail lights. The neoprene
body matching rear bumper also sports more of the red and white
striping. Nice 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels in shiny covering
finish and some edge stripes in red and maroon are 17x8's are
wrapped in 245/45ZR17's. Time to go...fast.
Interior
Nicely presenting and equally as welcoming sexy red leather buckets
are in front, and a 2 plus 2 bench which are essentially 2 more
individual attached buckets are in back. GTO embroidery on the
backs of these chairs and big bolsters and inserts are all smoothed
over red leather. A very clean dash, with red background
instrumentation, and very clean controls, as well as a small LED
display in the center console are there for your monitoring. Billet
aluminum pedals and an original steering wheel are noted. A power
driver's seat, black sculpted center console and black and red door
panels all make the interior of the "smooth operator" a joy to
behold.
Drivetrain
An LS2 6.0 Liter V8, original to the car, is under the hood. EFI
feeds the mill and a 4L65E 4-speed automatic with a limited slip
3.46 differential in the rear capture the ponies and turn them to
forward motion. All looking clean and great for this fairly low
mileage goer and show-er. Dual stainless steel mufflers pump out
the sound of speed and power.
Undercarriage
In a nutshell, very clean, slight surface rust on the usual
corrosive steel parts, but totally unremarkable. Beautifully
preserved, and obviously never taken out in a snow/salt
environment. Independent suspension and power disc braking all
around. It is equipped with an all aluminum driveshaft for some
weight loss.
Drive-Ability
Gotta love a low mileage piece of late model muscle, and this car
does not disappoint. All good under this hood, and in the seat and
surrounding environment. A pleasure to drive, thank you very
much!
Taking a close look at this well cared for original. Black paint
with a broken up white painted highlighting trimming, and some more
belt line trimming, shiny wheels, and smooth slippery red leather,
strap on your lead foot, and brush your sweet tooth, you are going
fill that cavity of a hankering for some euro area design and
speed.. let's for a ride!
