Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe #4562
The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro is an American pony car which
appeared in Chevrolet dealerships on September 29, 1966 for the
1967 model year on a brand-new rear wheel drive GM F-body platform
and was available as a 2-door, 2 plus 2 seater. The RS was an
appearance package that included hidden headlights, revised tail
lights with back-up lights under the rear bumper, RS badging, and
exterior bright trim. It was available on any model.
For consignment, an actual unmodified Camaro! Seems all the models
we get in here are all modified in some way. This consignment
retains its factory look, original order form, repair receipts
throughout the years, and did I mention that this car was purchased
by our consignor when she was just 18 years old? A respray in the
original color covers the restored body, the interior is mostly
original, and the original 327ci V8 and 3-speed are still in place.
Let's take a step back in time and have a deep glance at what was
occupying the showrooms and highways of Anytown, USA circa
1968.
Exterior
Chevrolet was on their heels with the popularity of the Mustang and
needed a quick and powerful home run to compete. Welcome to this
consignment which is the second year version, and it shows the
great lines, pony car long hood and short rear deck and has nicely
preserved chrome trimmings. In the narrowed grille are a single
rounded headlight on either edge, and just beside these a smaller
round signal light and bezel. Front fenders seamlessly melt into
doors which melt into the rear quarter panel. All gaps are well
aligned, and no rust for this unmodified skate, which is bathed in
factory matching Matador Red paint. The roofline has a wonderful
sloping B pillar and this mixes into the trunk deck which is short
but effective. Horizontal tail lights are showing near perfect with
shiny bezels. There is a thin chromed bumper below framing the
bottom of the car. Wheel well trimmings and a nice rocker trim
stretches between these wheel wells. 14 inch wheels with stock
Chevrolet hubcaps are wrapped by raised white letter BF Goodrich
215/70R14's on all 4 corners. A true unaltered breath of fresh air
for this 1967 Camaro.
Interior
A swing of the doors reveals survivor original factory equipment
and its all pristine. Black door panels, clean handles and cranks
and near perfect armrests are all here and showing nicely. Slipping
inside we can plant ourselves on the low back nicely styled bomber
style buckets in front. These are wrapped in black vinyl and show
with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters on the edges. A
black plastic console with an applique draped top holds a small
storage compartment and the chrome arm and ball shifter as it races
between the buckets. A very clean and front bucket matching rear
bench stretches across the back. Let's take a moment to feast our
eyes on an angled black painted dash that sports all original
equipment with wood applique dressing up the center of the dash and
2 deeply inset black gauges are in this angled dash, and you cannot
miss them. Neither can you miss the near perfectly preserved
steering wheel. Very good padding is on top and wrapped in black
vinyl. Like new black carpeting is on the floors, and above is a
tight headliner also bathed in gold. Almost all original, all
showroom unadulterated styling inside this cockpit.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and a mechanically sound although unrestored
cosmetically 327ci V8 awaits our ooooohhhhhs and ahhhhhhhs. This
codes to a November 30th 1967 327ci V8 2bbl carb with 210hp with a
3-speed manual transmission, V1130MA just as the should say. Power
to the rear tires goes through a 10 bolt 3.08rear axle, also
correct for this car. Beautifully preserved and looking original
with some paint chips off and smudging, but definitely
original.
Undercarriage
As with any well kept car, this undercarriage does not disappoint.
A mix of original undercoating and newer black paint cover the
bottom side and we note a few areas of repairs in the flooring and
trunk drop offs but all being structurally sound. Independent coil
spring suspension is up front along with drum brakes, and on back
is a leaf spring suspension with more drum brakes. All is looking
good and tidied up underneath of this original.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and off to the test track where it ran like a
champ. A great experience and a slice of what things were like in
1968 with everything working as it should.
Preservation of the original, no ladder bar add-on, no large tire
scooped out wheel wells, no frills... just pure Camaro fresh out of
1968 looks and all in excellent condition.
