Vehicle Description
1965 Buick Skylark Convertible
Known for its prolonged singing while soaring, the European Skylark
is oft seen hovering over large farmland expanses and open country.
The Skylark line of automobiles produced by Buick, from 1953
through 1998, has seen many variations and iterations of design and
performance. Soaring over roads, this Skylark has sung its tune for
a few generations, some of the "hippest" during the 1960's.
This 1965 convertible example of the Buick Skylark provides the
viewer of it with a combination of 1960's cool, and early muscle
cars disguised as family sedans. One of 10,456 produced
convertibles, not counting the ones that are no longer with us it
is definitely lower! This year Skylark sports some fab seats with
tuck and roll and plenty of buttons, a long trunk deck with a bar
of rear taillights stretching from rear quarter to rear quarter A
pointed nose raked forward and overall thinner and wider car, gave
the impression of speed and style. This particular car was treated
to a mechanical and interior refresh along with a conversion to a
4bbl carburetor, an upgrade to power front disc brakes, and new
brake and fuel lines. A new top was put on and sequential tail
lights have been added for a little extra pizazz and we have a tome
of repair receipts that document all of thework performed on this
skate. It comes with lots of extra parts, see the list in the
photos. Let's soar kids!
Exterior
A Flame Red repaint, the original color, covers the exterior
surfaces. Presenting with some dents, scrapes and dings, the
exterior presents nicely but does have some slight areas of orange
peel paint, a few touched up chips and at the lower doors, just a
smidgeon of rust bubbling is noted along with invasive rust at the
bottom of the driver's door. The iconic Buick trio of front quarter
venting are present on the car and are covered in chrome and morph
into a side spear running rearward on the slab steel sided body.
Grille, dual headlights and surrounds are in good condition with
mirror-like finishes and we note BUICK in block letters across the
leading edge of the hood and the Buick Tri-Shield hood ornament. A
black canvas top is clean with no tears or rips, and the rear
window is scratch and sun fog free, and can be electrically raised
and lowered. 5 spoke American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are
wrapped in deeply treaded tires. A rocker trim runs the length of
the lower part of this car and shows in good condition as well.
Front and rear bumpers are blemish free.
Interior
Newly minted in 2012, the interior vinyl is in excellent condition.
Beautiful black vinyl vertical ribbing is covering the split bench
seat in front, and bench seating in back. Also, plenty of buttons
lined up on the backs as well as being power actuated and the seats
are just fab! Door panels show black vinyl trimming, horizontal
ribbing, and more buttons, and have plenty of chrome accenting
attached even encompassing the row of power window rocker switches.
A panel of black carpet is on the bottom. The dash chrome and black
trim is in good condition with just slight tarnish and minor
scratching; however all gauges and knobs are clear and working. The
upper padded dash is crack free and in black and we note the round
ball vents for the heat and AC at the base of the dash. Black
carpet floods the floors and Skylark embroidered black carpeted
mats are on for extra protection.
Drivetrain
A 300ci V8, fully dipped in aqua paint is now within the clean and
original engine bay. This mill has been upgraded to a 4bbl
carburetor for a little extra kick in the seat and we note the
addition of an open element chrome air cleaner assembly. This is
attached to a ST300 2-speed automatic transmission, which is
correct for this car. A 10 bolt axle in the rear takes the power
hand off and spins the tires via 2.78 gears.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean with no rust, very structurally sound and lots of
black undercoating. Floor pans and rockers are smooth, rust free
and straight. Rear power drum brakes are seen and for the front,
new updated to power disc brakes all with new lines and hoses. A
like new dual exhaust snakes its way rearward and is looking nice
and polished. A like new fuel tank with new fuel lines hangs off
the back securely, and no runs, drips, or errors are to be seen
throughout.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and effortless drive for the test area. Smooth
acceleration, and a smooth ride too all in comfortable confines of
the convertible top.
I imagine dad behind the wheel, flat top cut, Wayfarers, white
shirt and thin necktie, with mom next to him with her Oliver
Goldsmith Manhattans, silk bandanna covering her low beehive, and
matching paisley dress, rolling down the highway with top down
smiling and just enjoying life. This convertible is drive away
condition, can be you, 57 years later with that same smile, and
sense of satisfaction in your 1965 Buick Skylark
Convertible...goose it!
