Vehicle Description
1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
The Fleetwood Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, was founded
by Harry Urich in the nineteenth century. It began as a small
community of craftsmen founded by Henry Fleetwood, Esq. of
Penwortham, near Lancaster, England, (the Fleetwood family
flourished in England in the 17th and 18th centuries). The rich
traditions of 300 years of coach-building that the Fleetwood Body
Company applied to its work on cars secured for it a high
reputation in automobile circles worldwide by the 1920s. Coachwork
was built by Fleetwood for a variety of luxury brands through 1924.
GM, having bought both companies named the Cadillac Fleetwood in
honor of this early coach building company from Pennsylvania, and
the town bearing its name...Fleetwood.
This 1 owner since new, all original right out of the square and
rectangle design era. A luxury land yacht '86 rad caddy is looking
great from all 4 corners. All is presentingin excellent condition,
this car is the definition of De' Elegance and is associated
frequently with the well heeled, is now a true classic and gracing
our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall. We give you a 1986
Fleetwood Brougham from the Cadillac Division of GM.
Exterior
Bathed in deep maroon sporting long and straight rust free steel,
well minded gaps and a padded maroon textured vinyl top we could
just say flossy, flossy. The paint has some inclusions and drips
from a respray, as well as the occasional scratch. This car sets
itself apart from the masses by the use of plenty of stainless and
chromed trimmings virtually seen edging all surfaces. From the
crested hood and chrome grille below, and the dual square
headlights, and shiny bumper below, we are rolling in first class.
Nice window trimmings, and a stainless rocker covering and straight
as arrows side trimmings and wheel surrounds that frame chromed
spoke wire wheels, we see as my mother would say "The rich get
richer" and this car is exemplary of that quote. On the back,
cathedral style vertical taillights are framed in large shiny
bezels and mate with a lower bumper which is also pristine. A 4
door saloon I now have car envy!
Interior
A swing of any one of the massive padded red leather and wood
paneled veneer doorsshows the conveniences just on the door will
take a rocket scientist a few days to learn. Toggles for locks,
windows, seat adjustments, and 2 joysticks one for the seats and
one for the rear view mirror, you don't ever need to leave your
seat. Within the wood and leather armrest is the door pull, door
actuator, and courtesy light. All is clean and well preserved
maroon with these panels, pulls, and actuators. Inside have a sit
on any one of the tufted overstuffed dark maroon leather encased
couches. These are wonderfully preserved, and any signs of aging
shows it as a graceful process. These seats float in a sea of dark
red carpeting which is fairly clean. Above in front, is a forest of
veneer for the dash front, with more controls, knobs and buttons.
In the center are mounted digital readout AM/FM/Cassette radio and
push button digital readout climate controls. For the passenger
more deep wood for the glovebox door and surrounds. A smudge is on
the glovebox door but otherwise we see nice padded maroon crack
free vinyl on top. A band of warning lights and the gas gauge is
stretching across the top directly against the windscreen. The
headliner is looking maroon and some sagging fuzzy broadcloth above
all this rich leather...breathe it in!
Drivetrain
Under the hood not unlike the rest of the car is a well preserved
unrestored and slight patina on the surface engine in 5.0 Liter V8
configuration. A single 4 barrel feeds it, and on the back a 200R4
4-speed automatic transmission whisks you down the highway. A 10
bolt 2.73 get axle provides fuel economy, as if you care.
Undercarriage
Ahhhhh yup! As expected, slight road dirt, some patina and fine
coating of surface rust is seen. Independent coil springs front and
a 4 link with coil springs on back. This suspension is beautifully
preserved and working like a charm. Power disc brakes are in front,
and power drums for the rear. You can now oooooh and ahhhhh at the
underside structure. On the door edges at the rocker I see some
heavier surface rust forming.
Drive-Ability
Slipping inside I began to wonder what the less fortunate folks
were doing, but then turned my attention to the key which fired up
the engine and took me to the test track which put a smile on my
pampered tush. All worked fabulously, and nary even a peep from the
suspension or engine during my enjoyable high end ride.
We have a winner! All original, a 1 owner car which has led a
pampered life, and it shows it. Does not look a day over 37 years
old.
