For Sale: 1977 Chevrolet Malibu in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1977 Chevrolet Malibu Classic

Introduced for the 1973 model year, Chevrolet's version of the A-body came in a trio of trim levels - Chevelle, Malibu, and Laguna - and a pared-down range of body styles. Gone was the convertible, and Chevrolet ditched the two-door post sedan and two-door hardtop coupe for the two-door colonnade coupe in preparation for federal rollover standards that never came to pass. During the colonnade-era's five-year run, Chevrolet sold more than 1,660,000 Malibus along with nearly as many Monte Carlos and almost 250,000 El Caminos. Despite their popularity when new, the car-collector community has largely shunned them since with almost nonexistent aftermarket support and only occasional appearances for sale or at auction.

For consignment, a mostly original car, with only 2 owners, garage kept 90% of its life, a fully original interior and consignor stated original paint. This car is oozing with late 70's charm. This end of an era Chevrolet Malibu Classic is the first of its ilk to grace our Hallowed Halls and is ready to be enjoyed as is or taken to the next level to become an absolute show stopper, either way you'll be looking good in the last of the big Bu's.

Exterior
The consignor stated factory application of light blue metallic covers the steel panels which have managed to avoid any onset of the tin worm thanks in part to being garage kept and thoughtful care over the ages. While slightly faded, the paint does still retain a shine and shows with a few chips and scrapes that are normal for the age of the car. Fit and finish as to gaps aredecent with slight misalignment of panels. The chrome is presented well with a mirror like finish on both of the oversized crash bumpers that grace the front and rear of this car. The quality of the chrome continues throughout the bezels around the stacked headlights as well as the chrome surrounding the egg crate style grille. Lots of steel to pay attention to especially with the flowing almost bulbous lines and stamped flares over the front and rear wheel wells. All of the glass presents well and is crack free with shiny stainless trimmings, and I simply adore the almost fastback design to the roof line. Out back, a thin silver strip below the 2-bedroom sized trunk holds the long rectangle tail lights complete with integral 3 section reverse lighting inserts. Finishing our tour of the exterior are 15" deep dish Chevrolet rally wheels with polished trim rings and center caps, all wrapped in deeply treaded blackwall rubber.

Interior
All original and presenting well for its age. Light blue door panels show off in a mix of vinyl, plastic and chrome delineation strips. Up front, a sheridan patterned cloth split bench seat provides room for 3, but does show a tear in the seam on the driver's upper cushion. A matching rear bench seat runs from interior panel to interior panel and presents as nearly new and lest we forget the armrests molded into the rear side panels for a little bit extra comfort. The original padded light blue dash shows little wear and no cracking, with wood applique under the instrument cluster and is loaded with slides for the heater and ac controls, wipers and various other functions. Front and center is a deeply inset speedometerin longsweeping format which is a clue to what is to become the norm for cars during the 1980's. Light blue carpet floods the floors and shows with some staining and tearing and up above is hanging a tighty lighty blue perforated blue headliner. A shout out to the cavernous trunk, which is presently loaded with spare parts that are included with your purchase.

Drivetrain
Filling the unrestored but clean engine bay is the correct and consignor statednumbers matching 305ci V8 topped now with a 4bbl carburetor and intake manifold. Chevrolet orange bathes this block as well as the valve covers and air cleaner assembly. All hoses and wiring remain supple and well organized. A 10-bolt rear axle takes the power from the numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. Overall a very nice presentation for this malaise era cruiser.

Undercarriage
Unrestored and original is the theme here. Surface rust is making an appearance on the solid steel frame and suspension components, however,no invasive rust is noted. Independent coil spring front suspension is on and works in conjunction with a 4 link and coil spring rear suspension to provide that GM quality ride. Power disc brakes are seen on the front and power drums are on the rear and A stock single exhaust system is noted with a glasspack style muffler but we do note that the catalytic converter has been removed.

Drive-Ability
Despite its few flaws, this car runs beautifully. It starts quickly, has great acceleration, and drives and rides very smoothly. All working components are there and working save for the AC blowing warm and the horn not beeping, otherwise it is a great cruiser.

A wonderful survivor and an honestly presented car. It will need some TLC on the cosmetic department if you so choose, and it has a great drivetrain to work around. A perfect way to enter the collector car game without breaking the bank or clearing out your 401K. Come to think of it, with today's inflation and stock market volatility, this car is definitelya better investment!
