Vehicle Description
2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Pace Car
For 2000, Chevrolet not only again called upon GM Motorsports for
design inspiration, but also to Monte Carlos of the past. Among the
traits carried over from older Monte Carlos were the stylized wheel
flares, vertically oriented tail lamps, and a stylized rear bumper.
Another classic trait for 2000 was the return of the "knight"
badging, as well as a full gauge cluster, not seen on the Monte
Carlo since 1988. Back again was the Super Sport moniker, replacing
the Z34 designation of the fifth generation, which was a Lumina
Coupe legacy. At the request of racing teams, Chevrolet stylists
added a slight "hump" on the rear trunk. It was a distinct trait
that stayed with Monte Carlo. From the NASCAR circuit came the
aerodynamic styling and ducktail spoiler. The 6th generation Monte
Carlo is based on the Monte Carlo "Intimidator" concept car,
produced in 1997. Trim levels initially consisted of the LS, and SS
and the LS used a 3.4 L OHV V6, while the SS got the 3.8 L V6.
For consignment, a pace car edition Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS with a
ground effects package, racing rear spoiler, stainless exhaust
tips, custom interior features and door opening kick plates. All
buttoned up and looking much like not only the car that paced the
Brickyard but also some of the cars that competed in said event.
This 2 owner, 40,349 mile, Limited Edition Pace Car sporting new
tires is sans graphics which this writer feels keeps the mystique
and allure flowing.
Exterior
Unlike the actual car to pace the Brickyard 400 this car is bathed
in Superior Blue Metallic, only this car is sans stickers and just
clean deep blue. Blue integrated front and rear bumpers, a blue
belt line trimming, and a racing inspired rear blue spoiler all
complete the look. The silver ground effects package is put on
where a bit of lighter flare shows on the bottom of the car and
races all around it. Monte Carlo, written in your grandmother's
script, is on the sides along with a blazing red SS badge. Way back
are stainless steel exhaust tips and a Limited Edition Pace Car
badge. On top, an electric sunroof, and on all 4 corners 16-inch
diamond cut aluminum wheels shod in 225/60R16 rubber from the 21st
week of 2021. Black window surrounds, gentlemen, start your
engines!!!
Interior
Nicely sculpted molded two-tone door panels in dark charcoal greet
us with a swing of the door. Power lock, power window and power
side mirror switches are embedded within. Slipping inside we see
leather accented seats with smooth black leather bolsters and
stitched black tuck and roll leather inserts with the driver's
outer bolster showing notable wear from entrance and egress. The
driver's side features 6-way power adjustments and both buckets are
even heated, and the Chevrolet bowtie is embroidered into the
headrests. In back is a larger 2 plus 2 bench setup very much like
the front but with a single seat with no break in the middle, just
a fold down armrest. The instrument panel with this car is the
limited-edition instrument cluster and is badged as such. An
AM/FM/Cassette/CD digital readout radio is within the dash confines
and the interior sports a 6-speaker sound system which has an
automatic volume increaser as road noise increases. A tight gray
headliner is above, and a presentable dark charcoal carpet is down
below.
Drivetrain
A 3.8-liter 200hp rated V6 with SFI is sitting in the clean engine
bay under the hood. On the back is a 4T65E 4-speed automatic
transmission and is equipped with a 3.29 final drive ratio.
Undercarriage
Very clean underneath with absolutely only slight hints of surface
rust on painted parts and barely any road dirt. Electronic traction
control has been installed, independent coil springs for the front,
and independent coil springs for the back sport tuned suspension.
Power disc brakes on all 4 corners are noted.
Drive-Ability
Low mileage cars are always a pleasure to slip into and this one
was no exception. It fired right up, and the test track proved no
match for it. All functions were working flawlessly, and it
provided a smooth ride with nice smooth acceleration, good handling
and straight braking. Every time I glanced in the rearview mirror I
was expecting to see a field of 43 trailing me patiently waiting
for the lights to turn off as we exited turn 4, but I digress as it
was nice to fantasize!
A freshly state inspected, low mileage, 2 owner, nice clean example
of a pace car edition Monte Carlo SS sans decal package. Sporting
Nascar styling cues and a long-lived Monte Carlo heritage you'll be
ready to pace any field, be it a stock car or local show
circuit.
