Vehicle Description
1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz
Originally derived from " "El Hombre Dorado" meaning man in gold,
this king's coronation included him being covered in gold dust,
then submerged into a sacred river. The story then changed to "Lost
City of Gold" which fascinated the Spanish explorers for centuries,
although all to no avail. Finally in the early 1900's, after many
attempts, the story was realized as myth, and trying to find the
King's lost civilization or his city were given up on.
We present a 1978 Eldorado Biarritz for consignment. This car shows
up in our hallways with some extra "pimpin" added on with a
stainless trim, red pin striping, and plenty of lavish amenities
that a car of this stature would have installed by the factory.
Exterior
Leading the way forward is the massive grille in a V shape with
flanking rectangular headlights on the side and a bumper below
featuring some vertical all chrome guards. Even the sides of the
front of the car are adorned with vertical chrome with winged
badges in black. Noted are the neoprene section between the bumper
and the steel is showing some cracking, discoloration and smudging.
The long, long hood has some stainless trim on the sides of the
bump ups which continue to the windscreen, then around the A pillar
and rearward on the sills and B pillars. Red pin striping is put on
just below this trimming and a small trim spear runs from mid front
wheel well to the rear well. A white landau padded vinyl top shows
wear and smudging and has a vertical opera window with a vertical
running light next to the window and a Biarritz badge. On the back
the long trunk deck forms more vertical spaces for the taillights
which have wide chrome bezels that meet up with the rear bumper.
More damage to this neoprene between the bumper and the bodywork.
Speaking of which all steel panels have a coating of Cotillion
White paint which is showing some age with dulling. The beginning
of invasive rust is seen on the seam of the landau top and bodywork
for the roof. Otherwise, the car appears rust free for the
remainder of the body. Large dish style wheel coverings with a
white center are wrapped by medium white walls on all 4
corners.
Interior
Opening these well-balanced massive doors which have white vinyl
mixed with some wood applique and a strip of red carpeting below.
The armrest and sill show cracking of the vinyl and are smudged
throughout. Wonderful overstuffed and square buttoned tufted
leather chairs are throughout the cockpit and are fairly clean and
tear free. The front seats are power adjustable. Contrasting deep
red carpeting is below and it is in good condition. A sleek red
plastic and wood paneled dash swoops across the front, and shows
all original fixin's. Including an 8 track player and a built in CB
radio. A white headliner is above and shows in a slightly smudged
condition.
Drivetrain
A big 425ci V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor is on top. A TH425
3-speed automatic is on the back and 2.73 final drive ratio puts
the power to the ground. This is a front wheel drive car so look
MA! NO HUMP!!
Undercarriage
Some surface rust peppers various areas of the framing and
suspension, but it is overall very light. Patina undercoating is
the norm with engines showing oiling on the bottom end. Torsion bar
front suspension, and 4 link with coil springs for the back
provides the ride, and power disc brakes are all around for the
stopping.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, nice driver and a great comfy ride. All functions
were good, although I noticed the power antenna goes up but the
flops over. All else was good.
Quite the white spectacle on this very large rendition of the last
year for the big Caddy. This one needs some TLC for the bumper
neoprene, and interior driver's door. Otherwise, it's an
all-functional high end large luxury land yacht ripe for the
picking.
