Vehicle Description
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396
The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks
good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring,
whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough
classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired.
That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go
wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. And when you factor in this ride's
big block drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate,
all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an
incredible muscle car!
For consignment, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS396. This car has been
the beneficiary of a full on restoration in 1983 andan engine
rebuild around 6 years ago. With its original build sheet and
painted a sultry Cranberry Red sporting wide black racing stripes,
shiny chrome, full gauges, and in overall very nice condition, its
worth giving this example an extra look.
Exterior
For 1970, the face lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 634 thousand
units. Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it
also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized
'golden era'. At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a
prominent "SS" emblem between a small "CHEVELLE" script,
stainless-trimmed headlights and an original chrome bumper.
Opposite that bumper, a domed cowl induction Super Sport hood leads
the eye to fresh glass that's seated in original stainless frames.
At the base of those frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's
mirror and white-tinged "SS396" badges complement correct wheel
trim. And at the back of the car, a second original, chromed bumper
hangs a standard Super Sport inlay. All bathed in Cranberry Red
respray with just a few minor flaws and wide black stripes racing
up the middle of the hood and trunk lid. Topping off the bottom of
this car are 14-inch Magnum 500 SS center badged wheels all wrapped
in Firestone Firehawk raised white letter radials on all 4
corners.
Interior
Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to
the touch, encased in black vinyl, original belts, and high backs.
In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames
inserted OEM gauges clean and pristine, providing all the telemetry
you'll need for those hot laps. Below that dash, black carpet
floats a correct chromed Hurst shifter and this is inside a correct
console. At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy
stainless trim and requisite "SS" emblems on bright handles and
supple, comfortable armrests. In front of the driver the steering
wheel laps a black column. And behind the passengers, the car's
fully restored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size
spare tire. The headliner is nice and tight, is also black, and
where the shoulder belts hang.
Drivetrain
Gaze into the gloss black engine bay and you'll find the numbers
matching L34 396ciV8, all bedecked in orange paint. This mill was
rebuilt about 6 years ago and has logged a mere 800 miles since.
This block balances a polished and decaled open-air cleaner on a 4
bbl Holley carburetor. This carb rides on a 4bbl intake manifold
which feeds Chevrolet heads that are topped by chromed valve
covers. A correct Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is
strapped to the rear of the mill, and it pushes power rearward to a
correct CCW1219 stamped12 bolt 3.31 posi rear axle.
Undercarriage
Well cared for would be the buzzword for the undercarriage, with
clean suspension, surface rust free floor pans with plenty of black
paint, and straight rust-free rockers. Independent coil springs and
a 4 link with coil springs are on for the suspension, and power
disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear. Dual
exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers is in charge of the exhale and
creates a wonderful mechanical symphony from the big V8 mill.
Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he
returned, he just had a smile on his face and 2 thumbs up, so it
must have been good! He reported nice acceleration, smooth
shifting, good cornering and all the positive essentials were
working swimmingly. Overall, it was very happy motoring.
A very nice example, ready to go and show with a simple turn of a
key. No wrenching, no bodywork, no fuss no muss, just pure SS
excitement and enjoyment all while looking just fab!
