AMG has always been synonymous with Mercedes performance, but until the late 2000's, they weren't much more than a bolt-on modification brand. With under 40K miles on the odometer, legendary Mercedes-Benz build quality, and impeccable (if not anal retentive) preservation from previous owners this is pretty much a new car. Forget for a moment that it's celebrating its thirteenth birthday soon and instead realize that when it was new, the price tag was way out of reach compared to today. The car is still just as fast, just as beautiful, just as intimidating, it's just tens of thousands of dollars cheaper. Cool, right? The inky black paint shows you EXACTLY what Mercedes-Benz quality means and with the AMG treatment adding blacked-out mesh grilles up front, sporty vents on the outboards of the front fascia, rocker panel extensions, a rear lip spoiler, and four oval exhaust pipes poking out from the rear diffuser, this saloon really stands out. The arching hardtop styling has aged well and this car still looks like nothing else on the road and if you want to push lesser traffic out of the way, just come pounding up in this sinister black hammer and watch them scatter. There are very few signs of use, only tiny imperfections you could count on one hand (and they took us a long, long time to find them), but otherwise it exemplifies Mercedes-Benz's commitment to excellence everywhere you look. In addition, it was treated to a full professional ceramic coating, so what you see in our pictures today is now sealed up for years to come. With just a few flashes of chrome, the most important being front grille and 3-pointed star, this car is the epitome of good taste, and the subtle AMG badge out back explains the swift blur that just shot by.

The interior is, of course, black anthracite leather, and it, too, looks like it should be sitting in the showroom. A total time warp, even the driver's seat fails to show any appreciable wear, short of a minor comfort mark or two, but it's obvious this interior has never seen anything scarier than a dusty pair of Rockports. That's real wood trim, not plastic, and the quality is tangible in everything you can see or touch. Mercedes was shaking off its staid, conservative look in the 2000s, so you get a swoopy dash full of informative AMG-spec gauges, grippy bolstered bucket seats, and a list of features as long as your arm. The list includes dual automatic climate control, power everything, heated seats, a booming Harmon Kardon stereo system and navigation, loads of airbags, and a power tilt/telescope wheel that makes it quite easy to get comfortable behind it. Everything works like it should (this is a Mercedes, after all) and if you want to feel like a grown-up, just try driving this car to work every day and watch what happens. There's a reasonably spacious back seat and a good-sized trunk, making this Autobahn-stormer the ultimate road trip machine.

Most of that is due to the tuned-up 6.2 liter V8 engine making 451 horsepower and 443 pounds of torque. That's the kind of torque that makes fighter pilots jealous and puts everything within reach. Small gap up ahead? No problem. Pesky kid in a Camaro next to you? Goodbye. The effect is addicting, as if you're attached to a giant recoiling rubber band and it feels like it could accelerate forever. Of course, when you're just trundling around, it's docile and invisible and the AMG Speedshift Plus 7-speed automatic transmission is smooth and unobtrusive, and takes advantage of every bit of this Merc's horsepower whether in Comfort, Sport, or Manual modes via the floppy-paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The sport-tuned suspension was worked over by the AMG wizards, too, so it's compliant but competent and the 4-wheel disc brakes are truly massive. Flashy 18-inch AMG wheels were part of the package and look awesome wrapped in 235/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear Michelin performance rubber.
