Vehicle Description
1956 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe DeVille
Here's to the past they can kiss my glass. I hope she's happy with
him. Here's to the girl who wrecked my world. That angel who did me
in I think the devil drives a Coupe de Ville. I watched them drive
away over the hill. Not against her will, I've got time to kill.
Down in Brokenheartsville...Joe Nichols
Hold on tight ladies and gents, there's one cool Caddy in the house
right now and it has shown up as a 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe
Deville. Large would be the buzzword on this 1950's big coupe.
Bathed in Pecos Beige, and two toned on the top with Taupe
Metallic, she sports plenty of chrome, some nifty fins and wide
whites that keep this huge skate firmly attached to the road.
Richly appointed with options, and a cloud like ride, we are off
like a prom dress to the country club to bat some little white
balls around.
Exterior
Double "D" Dagmars lead the way and have an egg crate style chromed
grille behind them and a surrounding chrome trimming above and a
bumper below. All this wraps around the front quarters and
continues with a very tasteful below the belt line trim with
Cadillac crest badging in gold just above. Through the door it
streaks and on the rear quarter makes a sharp turn upward and forms
a faux vent on the rear quarter bump out. A beautiful rocker trim
runs from stem to stern, and moves gracefully around the fender
skirts, with another trim spear above that ends in multiple
verticalchrome gillshighlighting the rear quarter panel which has
crowning fins with tail lights atop. Flow through the bumper
exhaust toprotect the spacious trunk lid is on and for the roof,
which is bathed in Taupe Metallic, there are plenty of chrome
trimmings surrounding the windows, and mind you not a straight line
of it to be seen! The lower body is all bathed in Pecos Beige, and
how apropos for this luxury liner. Over all the paint presents in
an acceptable patinaed condition with wear through, chips and
scrapes, but no invasive rust is noted. Wide whites are on all 4
corners, and Caddy caps in shiny polish form are covering the
wheels. Plenty of WOW factor here folks.
Interior
A swing of the large doors is much like opening a safe door. Here
we can see the attention to detail the designers of the time took
to make sure everything is really looking great with no expenses
spared. Utilizing several surface treatments from beige vinyl to
tan vinyl and even some buttoned square stitched broadcloth then we
stitch all this and add a mesh metal panel with the crank for the
wing windows and door actuator, and pepper it with a Caddy crown,
and elongated Chevron and some shiny handles, and we have only
described the doors! For the seating we note more buttoned square
paneled heather pattern broadcloth in beige for the inserts, and
beige gabardinebolsters, all bordered with cream piping. The seats
are torn in a few areas with the worst being the driver's upper
outer cushion and are trimmed with large chrome surrounding tub
accenting. The rear seat is as impressive with a central beige
cloth split panel including a fold down armrest. The original dash
is a mixture of the brown leather, gold paint, and plenty of
horizontal ribbing and shiny trimming surrounds and knobs. The
cream bakelite steering wheel fronts this dash and is in good
condition. Brown carpet floods the floors and is covered by a brown
rubber mat, and a wonderful tan mohair headliner hangs above. A
factory AM radio is noted, as is an aftermarket AM/FM/CD player
hanging below the dash
Drivetrain
Under the large hood, sits an impressive rebuilt in 2017 364ci V8
which is original to this car and also numbers matching. It's all
in dark blue and appears well detailed, with some slight paint
chipping and minor patina. A single rebuilt 4-barrel Carter carb is
atop under the back batwing air cleaner housing, and on back is a
rebuilt in 2017 4-speed Hydramatic which pushes power back to a
3.07 rear axle.
Undercarriage
A combination of nice patina and some surface rust is noted
throughout the undercarriage. A solid structurally sound X frame is
present and rust free floor pans and toe kicks are seen. A few
areas of invasive rust are noted on the rockers, but should be an
easy repair. Power drum brakes are all around and coil springs for
the front, and leaf springs for the back, provide the ride. Our
consignor notes that new front wheel bearings were installed in
2019 and a new steering box was installed in 2022
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and on the test track performed well. There are
some misfires though, in the form of the power antenna not working,
thehorn not tooting, the wipers not wiping and the brake lights not
illuminating when the pedal is depressed. Faults aside the car
drove swimmingly with the signature Cadillac smooth ride, adequate
acceleration and smooth shifting from the rebuilt Hydramatic.
Big, buxom, bodacious and beautiful with some slight TLC needed on
a few areas, but notenough so to pass this car by. Car runs great
and looks all the part with no rust, and lots of chrome. The bigger
the better and this one is just nearly the best!
