Original windshield, chrome wheels and new tires This Japanese 2+2
coupe was ahead of its time when it came out during the 1990s. This
example, built in September 1997, represents the top-line model,
complete with all-wheel drive and twin turbos. Finished in Solano
Black (code 08), the car?s paint and trim are in overall very good
order, the bodywork is straight and the engine bay is extremely
tidy. The body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the rest of the car.
The car retains its original windshield and its rear cargo area,
with cargo cover, is also in very good order. This car rolls on
newer Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 radials, size 245/40ZR18
at every corner. Each tire is mounted to an original chrome,
five-spoke wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good order.
Under the hood is a 3.0L DOHC, 24-valve twin-turbo V-6 engine with
twin intercoolers and dual exhaust. The turbocharged variant had
the lowest compression ratio at 8.0:1, with each bank of the V-6
having its own independent turbocharger and intercooler.
Turbochargers were built by Mitsubishi. The engine is backed by a
Getrag six-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features
include air-conditioning, sunroof, power windows, power
rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power
windows, power front seats, remote hatch and fuel filler openers.
AWD power is sent to the wheels through a system composed of a
center VCU (Viscous Coupling Unit) differential sending torque to
the front and rear limited-slip differentials. Under ideal
conditions, the system sends 45 percent of available power to the
front and 55 percent to the rear, However, 95 percent can be sent
to either axle deepening on the circumstances. The four-wheel
steering (4WS) system was designed to show off Mitsubishi?s
engineering abilities and was claimed to improve high speed
stability. Mitsubishi?s system could turn the rear wheels up to 1.5
degrees in the same directions as the front wheels when travelling
at 30 miles per hour or more. The car?s tan leather interior
contrasts greatly with the paint. The front buckets are in great
shape, as are the rear demi-buckets. The headliner looks great and
the black, four-spoke steering wheel contrasts with the tan. The
dashboard is in excellent order while the inner door panels look
good. The center console and shift lever help round out the inside,
along with the factory AM/FM stereo with cassette deck. Competition
to this Mitsubishi in 1998 included Acura?s NS-X, Chevrolet?s
Camaro Z-28, Mazda?s RX-7 twin turbo, Nissan?s 300ZX twin turbo,
Pontiac?s Firebird Trans Am, Porsche?s 911 Carrera Coupe and
Toyota?s Supra. If you had one of these in high school or college
or just before you got married and bought your first house, you
