When Mercedes-Benz loosened the leash on the AMG, it gave the mad scientists at Affalterbach the opportunity to show what they can really do. Unlike nearly all previous AMG efforts, the new AMG GT series did not share bodies with any other standard Mercedes road cars, and the cars were marketed as standalone AMG models. Arriving in 2-door coupe, roadster, and four-door fastback coupe form, the GT packed the brilliant twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 into a sophisticated and finely honed chassis. The GT R coupe joined the range in 2017, with an uprated V8 engine rated at 577 hp (up 20hp from the GT C), manually adjustable coilover suspension, active underbody aero, an adjustable rear wing, and numerous weight-saving measures.
