For Sale: 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in Avon Lake, Ohio

Vehicle Description

I’ve decided to sell my real deal, numbers matching 1979 Pontiac Trans Am SE WS6/L-78 400/4Spd car.  1 of 1,107 made with only 46,155 ACTUAL miles. This beauty runs on the 225 HP/320 lb/ft torque Pontiac 400 (W72/ L78) #’s matching engine, #’s matching Borg-Warner T-10 4 Speed Transmission, WS6- Special Performance Package, #’s matching Rochester QuadraJet 4-barrel carburetor, and 10 bolt posi-traction rear end.  For an inventory of how the car was optioned, please see the photograph of the MSRP Sticker or dealer order sheet.  $68,995 obo.

The interior is dressed with Custom Trim Group-(62N) Camel Tan Deluxe Luxury Vinyl Interior, along with the gold accented steering wheel and dash panel unique to the SE TA.  The seat covers & door panels are original to the car and look fantastic.  I’ve replaced both front bucket seat foam cushions, as well as the interior floor carpet with Camel Tan cut pile, molded ACC, with mass backing carpet from Firebird Central.  The Delco GM AM/FM 8 Track is factory correct and both work as they should, whether you’re jamming a Zeppelin 8 Track, or just listening to the radio.  All of the instrument panel lights work, and the dash bulbs were painstakingly replaced with the longer lasting LED bulbs, as well as a majority of the dash wiring replaced.  Seat belt, parking brake, & high beam light indicators all work inside the instrument cluster.  All the gauges function properly, and the wipers, rear defroster, and cigarette lighter work as well.  I decided to install a period correct, rebuilt GM Tilt Steering Column in place of the non-tilt column for comfort and looks.  I followed this up with all new levers, and replaced some internals to ensure proper functionality of the turn signals and horn.

This Trans Am has received one previous re-spray (single stage) years ago that still presents well as evidenced by the photos and the trophies I’ve taken home from car shows. I had the transmission rebuilt, a new clutch, and main seal installed ($2,300) 900 miles ago.  I was told the motor was pulled and rebuilt by the second owner after the vehicle sat for many years in his garage, however, I have no documentation or receipts to verify this, other than the condition and performance of the car.  New BFG Radial TA 255/60/R15 tires were recently installed.  These tires are slightly wider than factory specs, and in my opinion give the car a wider stance and meaner look, while still in good taste to the vehicle.

I have over $17K in repair/restoration receipts during my ownership tenure (4 years) which are detailed below and will transfer with the car.  This TA is fully documented with PHS documentation, as well as retaining all of its original paperwork that came with the car when purchased new (see photos for all docs), including the original MSRP sticker!!  Unfortunately, I do not have the original build sheet.  I suspect it’s located somewhere within the rear seat area still.  The gas tank was replaced, as well as the front seats taken apart for the seat cushion install, and the build sheet was never recovered.  I have not taken apart the rear seat as it’s pristine and the car’s originality is well documented and verified without it.

This car looks, runs, sounds, and drives excellent.  Is it perfect?  No, and that’s why it’s priced accordingly. You can take this car to shows and bring home the trophy every time, or take it out for long runs on sunny weekend’s as I did. Or, you can spend many hours in the garage having a beer just staring at it with your buddies like we did!

Here’s what’s not working: The AC compressor seized and will need replacement.  You will also need a new belt & coolant.  The clocks second hand and hands are moving, however, I’m unable to reset the correct time by pulling the knob out.  Most GM clocks of this vintage rarely even move.  With photos, I’ve highlighted a couple of blemishes that standout:  Regarding the interior, the center console on the driver side has a blemish I’ve documented for your review.  The driver side window pillar has a very small area that’s bubbling up which I’ve photographed as well.

Below is a list of the restoration/repair work I’ve had done verified w/receipts including, but not limited to the following:

This TA checks all of the boxes any collector requires when hunting down one of these very rare cars: L78/WS6 SE, Original, numbers matching drivetrain, Low, original documented mileage, all of the documents & physical verification regarding the car and its originality, and a high level of restoration and preservation as this one currently sits in.  Think about it, of the 1,107 SE 400/4Spd cars made, how many still exist today?  Out of those still in existence, how many have the original drivetrain, etc. still intact?  From those cars, how many aren’t sitting in a barn or field rotting away?  Of those, how many are restored or original to the level this one is?  Not many by my calculations.

I’ve moved back east this past year from AZ and have decided to let this car go to the next Super Fan to enjoy and appreciate.  Life has changed, as well as my desire to own such a vehicle.  Title is in hand and I’m not desperate to sell it.  NO TRADES & I DO NOT NEED HELP SELLING IT.  Low-ball offers are not going to be taken into consideration.

The photos and description speak well for the car in its current state, which should answer the majority of your questions.  Please review the photos and the ad description before asking questions.  If you still have questions, I’m happy to discuss them by phone.  I’m available weekdays after work- 5PM Eastern and weekends to discuss them for serious buyers only please.  I strongly encourage any potential, serious buyer to personally inspect and drive the car for your final evaluation and consideration. However, I’d hurry because the car is in OH and the weather is starting to turn towards winter and the car will not go out on test drives in inclement weather.  Cash or Wire Transfer only.  Cash will be verified at bank during normal business hours.  Car is being sold “As is” with no guarantees or warranties implied or expressed.
