Ever want to be the most intimidating and exciting person at every
stoplight? This 1974 Mercury Montego is a road-legal tribute to the
Wood Brothers #21 NASCAR racer. And this is far more than just the
paint theme appearance of a racer. It was specially built to run
the thin line between road cars and track stock cars. So you'll see
terrific details like the fully upgraded suspension, five-speed,
roll cage, racing seats, roaring side exhaust, four-wheel disc
brakes, and big 521ci Ford Racing V8.
NASCAR fans need no introduction to this car. The Wood Brothers
Purolator Mercury was a fast car, and driver David Pearson was a
steady hand. So it made for one of the most exciting (although
slowest) Daytona 500 victories ever. This tribute car was built to
be a 2010 charity auction to raise money for and draw plenty of
attention to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. And since this is a
showpiece, it was done to a high level. Gateway Classic Mustang
built it, and the included restoration photos show a complete frame
off build where they took the time to paint everything from the red
undercarriage to the golden #21 on the doors. So you'll love the
race-ready details, like the Cragar wheels, de-chromed body, and
large rear spoiler. But as you look at the fit of the panels and
the metallic undertone of the red paint, you also realize this one
loves being a street-legal show car.
The interior has the right style and substance to be a Wood
Brothers tribute. These guys were famous for using bold red
interiors when most other racers were flat black or gray. It made
the original car memorable even the few times it wasn't in the
winner's circle. So this build looks clean and bold as it carries
on the tradition. This tribute also has the proper racing
components with a full race cage, body-hugging racing seats,
Simpson five-point harnesses, a Grant sports steering wheel, toggle
switches, Wilwood pedals, a Keisler shifter, and a dash full of
AutoMeter sport Comp readouts. We've pretty much named everything
inside because anything else that was holding weight was
eliminated.
Under the hood is a 521 cubic-inch V8. It's far larger than the
current NASCAR regulations because they'd go bigger if they could,
too! This mighty V8 has all the right go-fast goodies, like Super
Cobra Jet aluminum heads, an Edelbrock Torker II 460 intake, an MSD
ignition, and topped with a Holley 950cfm four-barrel carburetor.
Headers add even more power as they connect with the race-style
side exhaust. And you'll also spot the right supporting components
everywhere, from a large aluminum radiator to the Milodon oil pan.
The five-speed manual transmission puts you in firm control of the
big power and its thunderous soundtrack. Looking at the
undercarriage photos, you can see everything is fresh and bold.
You'll also spot NASCAR-style trailing arm rear suspension and a
limited-slip 3.50 9-inch rear end. And the full racing-style frame
supports reinforce everything from the engine bay to the fuel cell
area in the trunk. Add in KRC power steering, four-wheel disc
brakes, and drilled & slotted rotors, and this is a true race car
for the road.
Just imagine what people will think when you pull up to stoplights
next to them. This is the fun tribute with a cool look and
professional-grade power that you know belongs in your garage. Call
