Vans, we've got a special Vanagon Westfalia for you to take a look
at! The van we have here for your consideration is a well
maintained, one family owned, highly original example. As we all
know, the VW van has cemented its place in pop culture thanks to a
lineage that spans generations. The unique layout of a rear engine,
rear wheel drive van equates to more passenger or cargo space
inside. It makes for a perfect platform for a van that is a camper.
If you've ever wondered what it was like to walk into a VW
dealership in 1982 and take a look at a brand new Vanagon, looking
at this Vanagon is about as close as you may come to that. To put
this van's age into perspective, the music charts at the time were
topped by the likes of Men At Work, Hall and Oates, Olivia
Newton-John, Chicago, Survivor, and Huey Lewis and the News among
many others. E.T., Rocky III, and Fast Times At Ridgemont High were
popular at the box office. Trivial Pursuit was new to the market,
Sony Walkman units were gaining popularity, while Ronald and Nancy
Reagan occupied the White House. We don't like to make the claim
that a vehicle looks brand new, but this VW is extremely impressive
and very close to looking new. Of course looking at it very
closely, small imperfections can be found, but we do mean small.
This Westy has been loved by one family since it rolled off the VW
of Battle Creek Michigan showroom floor, in November of '82. This
is a P27 Deluxe Westfalia Van rather than the P21 which was also
offered at the time. Service records, original books and manuals,
and the original window sticker are included with this special van.
Assuan Brown paint with the immediately recognizable white
Westfalia top are a handsome combination for this Westy. The
standard squared off body lines, sliding door, lots of windows, and
small efficient wheels and tires are just what you would expect
from a Volkswagen van. The original paint is glossy throughout with
no fading evident, all trim and badging is in great condition, and
all window seals are in great condition. The Westfalia Camper
upgrade to the Vanagon featured a few helpful amenities one may
need to go camping in comfort. Things like a refrigerator, two
burner stove, sink, swing-out tables, swiveling seats, and two beds
- the back seat folds flat, and the second bed is in the pop-top
area. Storage cabinets, drawers, and storage closets with mirrors
are other extras inside this van. Multicolor seat upholstery was
standard, as was Wall to Wall carpeting. Everything inside the van
is in great condition right down to the table tops and the dash
trim, which can be areas that commonly show age on Vanagons like
this one. The driving position is comfortable, although sitting at
the front of the vehicle can take some getting used to when
parking. It is easy to forget that there is not a hood and front
bumper extended off the front to worry about. Vanagons are easy to
maneuver despite the fact that they are inherently slow. But let's
face it, Vanagons are not purchased to race around town in, but
easy cruises in this van will have you (and others on the road)
grinning from ear to ear. Providing power to the rear wheels is a
1.6 Liter Flat-4 Diesel engine mated to a 4-speed manual
transmission. Recent maintenance on the van includes replacement of
timing and accessory belts, the brake booster, brake hoses, front
calipers, rear shoes, and wheel cylinders. This Westy is ready for
adventure! An extremely nice, low mileage example of a Vanagon
Westfalia is hard to find, especially in the
