A classic sedan delivery is usually a really cool surf wagon today.
But when you can get one in a 1959 Chevrolet - one of the most
distinct and sought-after designs - it's ready to be an
attention-grabber. And with legendary big block power, an overdrive
transmission, and an extra comfy A/C interior there were big
investments here to take this unique sheet metal and make it an
all-around terrific classic.
This cool Chevy commands your attention from the moment it comes
into view. But it's not necessarily the custom pieces that are the
first thing you find striking. The delivery vehicle was all about
being a simple worker machine, but the Chevy sedans this year had
so many details that even industrial duty looked glamorous. You had
the unique "eyebrow" hood trim, curved windshield, and bright
chrome wraparound bumpers. And the tailfins are beautiful pieces
that seem to rise higher as the fenders sink lower. They wrap
around to meet on the deep "V" tailgate design for a true work of
art. But this is more than just a vintage presentation. The red
paint sets the tone for a street machine. It has the kind of glossy
but imperfect style you'd get on a hot rod. And as you look at the
Cragar SS wheels with extra meaty rear tires, you start to get the
impression that this unique Chevy is made to deliver serious power
to the streets.
The interior is a well-done package that gives you vintage style
with all the right fresh upgrades integrated. For example, the
split-bench seat is a true classic, but the plushness adds a new
level of comfort. There are more great upgrades like the
retro-style AM/FM digital tuner that has an aux input, cup holders,
and cold-blowing R134a air conditioning. The '59 Chevy had a
terrific instrument cluster that looked like it belonged on a
European sports car, and it only gets better when updated with a
set of crisp AutoMeter readouts. It contributes to a nice
driver-oriented feeling. In fact, this Chevy has plenty of fun
sporty details that also have more function. For example, there's
diamond plating on the lower dash, but the upper dash has a classic
horizon tach mounted prominently on top. And the iron cross-style
steering wheel is mounted on a tilt column. The rear cargo hatch
swings up and out of the way to swallow the big items, and it also
gives everyone a good view of the bow tie logos on the walls. And
all that extra space in the finished cargo area is ideal for
everything from tailgating to featuring a product from your
business.
When you open the hood, you can't help but sing a tune. Oh
yeah...she's real fine, my 409. This is an awesome-looking big
block heart that was the king of the streets back in the day. And
we have receipts showing this is a modern performance build. The
motor was first hot tanked, and it has been rebuilt to be enhanced
and fortified with Ross Racing forged 10.5 pistons, an Eagle
crankshaft, a hydraulic roller camshaft, Isky Racing roller
lifters, Edelbrock aluminum heads, and topped with an Edelbrock
AVS2 four-barrel carburetor. The whole package was built to run
correctly, and that's why you have good supporting components like
upgraded pulleys, a newer battery, and an aluminum radiator with
dual electric fans. The Dougs headers snake their way under the
X-frame chassis, and so this V8 has no trouble announcing its big
power thanks to the wicked dual exhaust. The 700R4 four-speed
automatic transmission is ideal for handling big power while also
smoothly shifting you into overdrive. And the suspension is the
right mix of robustness and comfort with features like tubular
front A-arms, a thick front sway bar, air shocks helping the coil
spring rear, and a rear sway bar. Out on the road, features like
power steering, power brakes, and front discs make this a fine
cruiser to show off those big tailfins everywhere.
