Vehicle Description
1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Regarded as one of the most significant drivers in NASCAR history,
Earnhardt won a total of 76 Winston Cup races over the course of
his career, including the 1998 Daytona 500. He also earned seven
NASCAR Winston Cup championships, tying for the most all-time with
Richard Petty. This feat, accomplished in 1994, was not equaled
again for 22 years until Jimmie Johnson in 2016. His aggressive
driving style earned him the nicknames "The Intimidator", "The Man
in Black", and "The Count of Monte Carlo". Also, his success at the
restrictor plate tracks of Daytona and Talladega earned him the
nickname, "Mr. Restrictor Plate".
Our consignment is a low mileage, (51,957), 1988 Monte Carlo which
was purchased because of the intimidator. Win on Sunday, sell on
Monday. This T top has undergone a respray but in the correct 79U
Dark Maroon Metallic. A good driver ready to be snapped up and
driven as it has plenty of miles to go for this one!
Exterior
With a nickname of "Intimidator" what could be a better color than
black? Well how about Dark Maroon Metallic? Then throw on some gray
striping around the wheel wells and mid sections on either side and
on the bumper tops in front and rear. Add on an SS sticker on the
door panels, blacken the grille, add a window to the B pillar, a
spoiler to the trunk lid and two corner tail lights on a swooping
down rear panel. Neoprene body matching colored bumpers give the
car an aero look. The racy look comes from the aluminum wheels
which play with satin and shiny silver paint to accentuate their
form. Raised white letter tires are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Maroon crushed velour with maroon vinyl bolsters are seen on the
front buckets, and rear bench. A center console is between the
front buckets and is all maroon. Some fading also seen on the seats
in the velour, however the maroon smooth vinyl remains in good
condition. Factory air, along with PW, PS and PB, and power locks,
as well as a toggle for the drivers mirror are the options that
came with the original car. Some fading is seen on the door panels
next to the window openings, but door panels are in otherwise good
condition. Square and rectangle design abounds in black with some
red thin accenting, and gauges are round. Carpet appears in good
condition, and carpeted floor mats are installed in the front and
rear of the car. A T top roof is on and the headliner is sagging,
however the consigner states the top does not leak.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 305ci V8 with a 4 barrel carb on top and
attached 200r4 4 speed overdrive transmission that throws power to
the rear wheels via a 3.73:1 limited slip 10 bolt differential.
This was standard setup for the 1988 Monte Carlo. All within a
pristine highly detailed clean engine bay.
Undercarriage
F41 sport suspension is mounted to a clean and light surface rusted
frame and undercarriage, (floor pans, wheel wells, and rockers).
Independent coil spring suspension is on front along with power
disc brakes and on back power drum brakes work with a 4 link with
coil spring suspension. Dual exhaust, nice and clean is noted.
Drive-Ability
Always a pleasure to drive one of these, and this one is in
reasonable 51K+ condition. It fired right up and on the test track
cruised and bruised when I put the accelerator to the floor. Solid
panic stopping which was bias free, and good handling. All
functions were functioning as they should, save for the AC which
blows warm, and the gear shift indicator does not move.
A low mileage car which is still in very good condition, and could
easily be a daily driver. Nice colors and aero exterior with the
gauge package interior. Boogity Boogity Boogity! (can I say
that??)
