This lovely and exceedingly rare flagship station wagon from
Pontiac is offered here in high-line Deluxe trim and powered by the
robust 122-hp L-head inline-eight mated to an optional Hydramatic
transmission. A very well-documented example, this charming wagon
was ordered new from McAndrew-Jernigan Pontiac of Tuckahoe, New
York. The original sales order reveals this extremely well-equipped
Pontiac was delivered with $818.45 worth of options - the
equivalent of about ten thousand dollars in today's terms.
Equipment included the Hydramatic transmission, power steering,
underseat heater, radio, lighted hood ornament, rear fender shields
and much more. All told, the first owners, Henry and Catherine
Gaisman, of Hartsdale, New York, paid $3,962 for their shiny new
Spruce Green Pontiac Wagon. Records on file show that Mr. & Mrs.
Gaisman cherished the Pontiac for decades, with service receipts in
their name going up to at least the mid-1980s. Subsequent owners
clearly treated the Chieftain with similar respect, and the car has
survived the years in marvelous condition, with light restoration
work performed as needed, and the car appears to have never been
disassembled. This charming example of 50s Americana represents the
golden age of the station wagon, when style and quality ruled. It
is ready for its next devoted custodian to continue enjoying it
