Vehicle Description
The Jeeps may have won the war, but this 1956 Willys Jeep is ready
for a different kind of battle. With those awesomely wide tires and
a carefree attitude, it's hard not to think about all the fun ways
to attack the outdoors.
A CJ3 is the right vehicle for this kind of fun. They share plenty
of the style and components with the military Jeeps, but Willys
also redeveloped the rig so that it could accept more jobs,
including farm equipment. That seems right on one that's modified
with tractor tires. There's a nice look from the red and black mix,
but the complete package is the opposite of fancy because this is
built for fun. After all, there's a (soda) bottle opener on the
rear! And you'll even appreciate details like the side steps, front
tow hooks, and rear trailer ball attachment.
The interior is a proper Jeep simple affair, right down to the
steel steering wheel and column shift for the three-speed. The only
upgrades you're likely to spot are the ones that make this more
functional. The vinyl seat covers and liner paint on the floor are
about robustness. And the oil and power gauges under the dash give
you the essential info.
The 134 cubic-inch Go Devil motor is a true wonder of robust
simplicity. It makes for a hardy torque master of a motor. And the
engine bay is exceptionally clean so that you can see nice
components like the newer battery and aluminum radiator. Part of
the simplicity is also two-wheel drive only for an easier and
lighter setup. Since the width of those tractor tires is more than
triple the size of the skinny factory CJs, and the grooves here are
made for moving the earth, we double you miss any 4x4
equipment.
Willys machines are robust and easy, so it wouldn't take much for
you to return this one to a more pure vintage state. But we bet
that's not what you're thinking about. Instead, you're picturing
all the mud parks on back trails that will be much more fun with a
classic Jeep that was made to dig in deep and slog through it all.
