Vehicle Description
1972 Citroen SM - 2.7L V6 - 5 Speed Manual Transmission - Factory
Adjustable Suspension - 66k Miles Shown (True Mileage Unknown -
Dark Brown Over Brown Interior Noted as being a high-performance
coupe that was produced by the French manufacturer Citroen, the SM
was produced from 1970 through the 1975 model year. Although
unusual for France, as luxury car production was heavily restricted
in the country by post-World War II horsepower taxes, this coupe
was the first response to the luxury/performance sector since the
export-oriented Chrysler Hemi V8 engine Facel Vega in the late
1950s. Known as Citroen's flagship vehicle, the SM competed with
high-performance GTs of the time from other nations and
manufacturers, such as Jaguar, Lotus, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alfa
Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. The SM provided a combination of
comfort, sharp handling, and braking not available in any other car
at the time. The magazine Popular Science reported that the SM had
the shortest stopping distance of any car they had tested. Because
the SM had a smaller 130kW (174 hp) engine than competitors, the
acceleration was adequate rather than exemplary €" some
competitors were quicker. The main export market for the SM was the
U.S., where the market for personal luxury cars was much larger
than in Europe. Competitors in the market included the Cadillac
Eldorado, Lincoln Mark IV, and the Ford Thunderbird alongside
Italian, British, and German imports. Noted for sale here is a 1972
Citroen SM that bears a dark brown exterior over brown interior.
Displaying an extremely unique and space-age design, this SM is
unlike anything else on the market. Although the exterior paint may
see fair, there is evidence of solvent pop on various areas. There
is also an unmatching pinstripe that only runs on the driver's door
and quarter panel. Upon closer inspection, it does appear that the
vehicle is missing body line trim pieces on both sides. Inside the
cabin is a brown leather interior that is complemented with a black
headliner and dash. The front buckets and rear bench seat are clean
but seem to be missing a softness that is usually associated with
leather. The black headliner and dash appear well-kept. Unique to
the SM is the center console mounted radio which is positioned
between the driver and passenger. Under the hood is a 2.7L V6 that
is complimented by a 5-speed manual transmission. With an engine
compartment and chassis that show as stock, it can be understood
that this vehicle is original in nature. The odometer is noted as
showing 66k miles but we cannot confirm if these are original
miles. It is also noted that this vehicle is equipped with the
pneumatic factory adjustable suspension. Included in the sale are
an original owner's manual as well as a repair booklet. If your
collection is seeking a very unique, high-performance coupe, this
Citroen SM might be the perfect fit. Although this example is not
one of concours quality, this SM still has a lot of life left to
live and enjoy. We hope that you don't overlook the potential that
this vehicle truly has. Please call if interested. Thank you for
looking.
