Chevrolet is no secret in building fast and powerful vehicles that
provide a ton of muscle for little money. The SSR is one that is
destined to be a future collectible. The car debuted at the Detroit
auto show in 2000 and the reaction was immediate, with customers
running into their local Chevy dealership to reserve their spot in
line for the concept that was soon to become a reality in 2003. GM
green-lighted the concept with a few modest changes to the concept,
but the biggest letdown was the engine and transmission. Automatic
and a wimpy 5.3L V8 was the standard setup and turned the hot rod
concept into a utility machine. Fast forward to 2005 and Chevy
turned up the performance with the Corvette-based 6.0L and the
availability of the 6spd manual transmission. Now with 390HP and a
0-60 time of 5.5seconds this vehicle had the looks, power, and
rarity. Only 7,196 SSRs were produced for the USA market.
