Vehicle Description
For Plymouth, 1971 opened up a whole new world for the marque's
B-body performance cars as the boxy lines of the previous decade
gave way to a streamlined styling that was deemed textbook for the
1970s. Thanks to wind-tunnel development, Richard Petty would
dominate the NASCAR series with this model that year. Being one of
only 28 4-Speed Hemi Road Runners produced for 1971, this special
Mopar, with its instantly recognized cartoon character name and
"Beep-Beep" horn, is unique in other ways as well. Due to changes
in emissions and insurance rates, it would be the final year for
Hemi production, and this car carries forward the theme of "bad
boy" in its factory TX9 Formal Black-on-black color combination
accented by the over-the-top (roof, actually) white factory strobe
stripe.
This car has been given a comprehensive restoration and is
documented with two original broadcast sheets and an accompanying
Dave Wise research report. With the car featuring original sheet
metal and body panels with the original VIN and trim tags in place,
under its Air Grabber hood is a correct 426 Hemi V-8 powerplant
with dual 4-barrel carburetors, NASCAR-focused Hemi heads and
bottom end, and factory-specific detailing. This A34 Super Track
Pak car also has its matching-numbers 4-speed transmission and
proper 4.10-geared Sure Grip Dana 60 rear. Power brakes, heavy-duty
shocks and Hemi-specific suspension pieces complete its road
manners. The exterior is accented by the Air Grabber hood with
hold-down pins, dual exhaust chrome tips, white HEMI logos, Road
Runner icon decals and insignia, dual chrome sport mirrors and hood
insert blackout paint. The mostly original bucket-seat interior has
the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, power seats, the A01 Light group and
rim-blow steering wheel. Of course, the crowning touch would be the
Rallye wheels and wide Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires, both of
which give the car a premium look to the fuselage body. The Road
Runner is legendary, and it's fair to say that no coyote will catch
this one.
