Vehicle Description
1966 Ford F100 Fleetside Pickup
In 1925 the Ford Motor Company introduced the first "pickup" based
on the Model T Runabout. Ford offered the rear "pickup box"
separately at their dealer parts department for $25.00. The box was
then bolted onto the back of the vehicle as an accessory. Since the
box was "picked up" at the parts department by the customer, the
term "pickup" took hold for this style of vehicle. Later the box
was installed at the factory and evolved into today's pickup
trucks.
Peabody, let's get into the way back machine gracing our
much-revered halls here at Classic Auto Mall and it's going to take
us for a trip in, under around and through a 1966 Ford F-100
pickup. Bathed in blue, an all correct truck, and all nicely done
trimmings, and some recent repairs and upgrades and it is now
showing off as a 9.0 out of 10. Purchased new by our consignor's
father and used mainly for a 5 miles trip to purchase hay for their
horses, this hauler has lived a charmed life. A repaint in 2000 and
being garage kept has helped preserve the originality and good
looks.
Exterior
Marlin Blue shouts from all sides of this truck and it bathes
straight steel panels all minding their gaps nicely. The paint
itself has aged well and only shows minor dings, chips and wear and
still showing as deep and shiny forbeing 22 years old. The original
egg crate white grille with a single headlight flanking on either
side, and the F O R D badge just under the front of the hood. All
over is nice badging, and the full length beltline trim spear
remains in good condition. The long bed is all steel and all blue
with little to no wear on the bed floor, just some slight paint
fade. We note the addition of silver fuel doors on both sides of
the bed, these are for the original owner added saddle mount fuel
tanks which allow this truck to make the trek from Pennsylvania to
Georgia without a single refill. A clean and rust free FORD
embossed tail gategives great scenery for the car behind you and
very much like new bumpers in white and white paintedwheels with
standard Ford covers round out the package perfectly.
Interior
Not unlike it appeared in the showroom in 1966, we see the original
dash with small centered instrument clusters which give only the
basics, fuel, speed, and water temp, along with an alternator and
oil warning light. Dash central holds the factory AM radio and a FM
receiver has been added to the dash bottom. A big steering wheel is
fronting this dash, and on the floors below is nice like new black
rubber. The remainder of the dash shows off in blue painted metal
with a black padded topper over the steel. The original blue vinyl
bench graces the passenger compartment, and door panels use all
blue steel very effectively to make this interior all come together
and look really original. Peering upward, we see a marbled gray
cardboard headliner which continues down and wraps the rear of the
cab. Flipping the bench forward reveals a small storage area where
the originalfuel tank once lived and the factory jack is tucked
into the back of the seat.
Drivetrain
A flip of the 66 truck's hood and we see the original blue block,
blue valve covers and a black air cleaner assembly making up 352ci
of V8. On top feeding this mill is a 2bblcarburetor and this mill
is capable of 208hp. On the back is a 3-speed manual transmission
which sends power to a Dana 44 rear axle with a 3.25 gear ratio in
conventional format. All is looking nice within this unrestored and
patina riddled engine bay.
Undercarriage
Some patina, slight surface rust, straight and strong steel framing
and solid floor pans but along with a few of the body hangers
showing invasive rust. Otherwise it's strong black steel
throughout. Twin I-beam suspension with coil springs and radius
arms are up front and in the rear are leaf springs to provide the
perfect truck-like ride. Single exhaust with a stock replacement
muffler is on and we see the aforementioned original owner saddle
mounted fuel tanks along with drum brakes all around.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth runner, great driver and good handling were
experienced during the test drive. Everything was working just
perfectly and we looked great doing it.
A very nice preservation keeping with the factory look from 1966,
this pickup has a few faults, but is very sound structurally, has
good badging and chrome, and a snazzy mostly original interior. You
are now seeing BLUE in your future Sherman, but don't be sad...you
just need to visit our Hallowed Halls to make this former hay
hauler yours!
