With only 1,152 examples produced in 1982 for the European market,
seeing one is rare, seeing one in the US is even rarer....Well, you
can actually own this one! Baur was a factory authorized cabrio
conversion coachbuilder in Stuttgart that has been in business and
building BMW convertibles since the 1930's. The "TopCabriolet" as
they were called were built from 1978-1982 with less than 5,000
total units being produced. It consisted of a Targa roof and a
independent rear soft top. The E21 was sold between 1975 and 1983
or 1977 in the US. It is the first generation of 3 series that
replaced the beloved 02 series. Now, this unicorn we have here is
far from perfect but rare nonetheless. This Baur starts, runs and
goes down the road very well in my opinion. The body, although
faded with scratches, stone chips and other assorted wear
associated with time and miles is relatively free of rust. With the
exception of some very minor surface rust on the rockers, its
actually very solid as is the underside is quite clean if you ask
me. The interior is rough....Our consignor used this vehicle all
the time and hauled his dogs around who ultimately were the
culprits behind the rear seat destruction. Both the targa top and
the rear convertible soft top are also in very good condition and
latches all operated as they should. There are a couple lights that
are inop and turn signals that work sometimes. The car just had a
new radiator, brake lines and other assorted small items attended
to. This is one of those cars because it does not need much body
work and the mechanicals are pretty decent that if you a little
sweat and money in to this, you could really have something really
cool and something no one else on your block will have either.
