This 1970 Plymouth HEMI Superbird started life as a real R-Code 426
HEMI, one of 135 HEMI cars produced out of the approximately 2,000
Superbird examples built to meet homologation requirements for
NASCAR. Reportedly raced and wrecked in period with the original
HEMI V8 engine long gone, the previous owner favored a custom build
of this Superbird over a factory-correct restoration. Completed in
the 2000s, the build reportedly started with sourcing a driver's
door and floor mid-section from a Road Runner; hence its status in
the Superbird registry as a partial re-body. The Superbird is
currently powered by a 528ci HEMI crate engine, recently dyno-tuned
and generating over 500hp to the wheels, equipped with a TREMEC
5-speed manual transmission, custom coilover front suspension and
Wilwood brakes. Further improvements to drivability were made with
an aluminum radiator and high-capacity electric cooling fans,
Vintage Air system, power windows and a custom stereo system. No
HEMI Superbird was ever offered from the factory with air
conditioning. Featuring its striking factory-correct EK2 Vitamin C
Orange paint scheme, this Superbird is set up to drive and enjoy
without sacrificing modern comforts. From the Tyler Hoover
Collection.
