Vehicle Description
The restoration of this 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible
gave the paint an award-worthy sleekness. Along with a
professionally built engine for some added pep there are premium
upgrades like air conditioning and four-wheel disc brakes which
prove this convertible has been given the right investments to
deliver the premium feeling this Karmann Ghia deserves.
Volkswagen was upfront about what the Karmann Ghia was. They told
you how it gives you Italian styling and German build quality for a
value price. And the humble underpinnings were always part of the
charm. But some people thought a car that looked like an Italian
sports car was supposed to fully stir your driveling soul... and
this one does exactly that. The info we're told was that there were
basically two restorations (2004 and 2008). It was sort of about
getting your ideal car and then refining the idea. So the black
paint is borrowed from a true premium German, Mercedes-Benz, and
the quality application and proper care it's always received means
it continues to have a piano-like luster today. So the gloss knows
how to show off the sculpted curves created by the Italian design
house Ghia. The bumpers and trim are a high contrast to the black
in chrome/silver, but it all harmonizes from the level of shine
this sunshine-friendly convertible radiates. This is such a clean
and straight car that it had a feature story in Hot VWs magazine (a
copy comes with the sale) and we wouldn't be surprised if the front
trunk would be needed to take home some awards.
The snug-fitting convertible roof is another reason why the Karmann
Ghia has such a premium image. Because not every European drop-top
import offered such a good fit and proper roll-up windows. The
black soft top looks great against the black paint, but for true
distinction, you want to take it down. After all, black and tan is
a terrific European color combo, and there's even a tan convertible
boot for a proper sophisticated style. Corinthian leather
upholstery, smooth wood-like dash trim, and plush carpeting make
this a nice place to spend some time. And there are nice comforts
you don't expect in a VW like an AM/FM/CD stereo and cold-blowing
air conditioning. The high-back bucket seat, wood-rimmed Grant
steering wheel, tilt column, and clean VDO gauges all come together
for a true driver's car feeling.
The moment you check out the engine bay out back, you can see more
great signs of investment. The 1600cc motor is one of the tidiest
setups we've seen in quite a while, and so you can see all the
engine's great details. We're told this is a professional build
that includes a forged counterweighted crankshaft, a Bosch
distributor, and dual port heads with radius angle performance
valve job. Of course, the best performance piece is the control you
have with the standard four-speed manual transmission. It still
won't beat a Ferrari going down the road, but the solid
acceleration really feels quite sporty. Plus, there's a four-wheel
disc brake upgrade that works with the sharp handling to make this
quite a nice backroad VW.
Complete with a car cover, this is a special kind of Karmann Ghia
drop-top reserved for those few who want a fun pure European
driving experience in a car that you always wished was set up this
way. Call today!!!
