Vehicle Description
The 1989 Chevrolet S-10 Baja is the 4x4 small truck that was so
distinct that it burned its distinct image in our minds all those
years ago. That's why you had to immediately stop and take a look
at this one. And with its fuel-injected power, loaded interior, and
awesomely unique style, this value-priced Chevy remains just as
good as you hoped it would be.
This was the debut year of the Baja package for the S-10. The Baja
name came from the idea of making a truck ready to be a Baja 1000
race prerunner. And this really looks the part with the correct
single cab with short bed for the ideal 4x4 wheelbase. Plus, the
tall stance, flared fenders, front bumper protector, tubular rear
bumper, and roll bar light rack made this look absolutely ready for
a desert run. The lighting kit has even been upgraded to LEDs to be
useful in modern times. But as functional as this is, that's not
what made you fall in love/lust with it the first time you saw it.
Chevrolet created one of the coolest packages around with the
blackout bumpers, blackout grille, and a large black stripe along
the body connecting it all. Red was used for the best accents,
including the big bow tie on the hood. They would even give you
outlaw-style wheels right from the factory so that you didn't even
have to upgrade the alloys on this ultra-cool factory package.
The interior is nicely set up for a premium truck. That includes a
driver-focused attitude with high-back bucket seats, a center
console in-between, and a tilt steering column. This is highly
original, and so it does show its age, but it still remains quite
complete and attractive. It's loaded with features like air
conditioning, power windows, sliding rear glass, and an upgraded
AM/FM/CD stereo with Bluetooth. It makes for a comfortable driver
for when you just feel like driving through town creating envy in
those who wished they had a Baja (just like you once were.)
Under the hood is a fuel-injected 4.3-liter V6 motor. This was the
largest displacement available in the S-10s, and they had one of
the most robust reputations in the whole Chevy lineup. The engine
bay looks stock and honest, and you can see good maintenance,
including newer items like the alternator and the compressor. The
look of respect is also felt in the way this V6 fires up eagerly
and runs with the strength of a daily driver (even the odometer
possibly reflects the full mileage.) And of course, the 4x4
drivetrain with a two-speed transfer case gives this S-10 the
ability to live up to its Baja name. Add in power steering, front
disc brakes, and a four-speed automatic transmission with
overdrive, and you soon realize this capable S-10 is also a great
anytime cruiser.
Complete with maintenance records, this is the 4x4 you always
wanted from the first time you saw it over three decades ago. If
you're looking for the best in everything, you may use some of the
value price to budget for some work on the paint or repairing the
A/C blend doors. But those are the minor details. So you can see
that this gives you the ultra-desirable S-10 Baja in a clean and
comfortable package that's ready for fun on or off the pavement.
