Vehicle Description
1974 Chevrolet Nova
The 1974 Chevrolet Nova got a new promotional bent that echoed
Volkswagen's approach in pitching the Beetle's lack of change as a
virtue. Instead of focusing on any alterations, the 1974 Chevrolet
Nova sales brochure explained that, "we've been building
essentially the same car since 1968. We think we've got it down
pat". These were the years of the first energy crisis as Middle
Eastern countries cut back on oil exports. After waiting for hours
in gas lines and fretting about the prospect of fuel rationing,
thrifty compacts looked pretty good to plenty of Americans. The
Nova fit the bill.
For consignment, a modded 1974 Nova which is meant for the strip
and street competition. It's more in race form than everyday driver
form which you will see in the photos and read in this description.
Just add a roll cage and you can use it on the strip...step up to
the tree please.
Exterior
This racer is wrapped in "peelable" paint now showing in matte
black. Some trimmings have been removed from the grille as well as
body trimmings and bumpers have been painted black. A massive rear
scooped hood is on and the smooth back of the car takes its time
visually to eventually melt into the trunk deck and side rear
quarters. Horizontal rectangular tail lights are on back and
another matte black painted bumper is present. 15 inch Weld
Draglite wheels are on and these add a nice highlight to the
otherwise black menacing sedan. Wrapping these wheels upfront are
26x7.50x15 rubber and on back 275/60R15's both from the 29th week
of 1998.
Interior
Swinging the doors, they are still cladded with black molded vinyl
and are in very good condition. Frontseating has been upgraded with
Corbeau racing buckets with 4 point belts for the passenger and
driver. Black carpeting covers the floors, and the rear bench has
been removed leaving straight steel for some weight loss. The dash
has been completely modified to monitor all aspects of your 1/4
mile trip, with circular gauges peppering the dash and sides of the
column and under the dash, all aimed at the driver. A lineup of
toggles and lights are in the former temp slider panel and where
the radio would be mounted. No headliner, just a lightweight
particle board mounted under the ceiling struts.
Drivetrain
Under the scooped hood we get right to the heart of the matter with
a 511ci V8 stuffed into the engine bay. It sports Comp Cams XR286R
(.653i/.660e lift 248/254 duration@ .050.) There are Cometic head
gaskets and TrickFlow heads. Feeding it copious amounts of fossils
and O2 is a single 4 barrel 1050 Quickfuel FX 4710 series
carburetor and a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission with a Gear
Vendors Overdrive unit allowing for a cruise on the highway at a
60mph low rpm rate. A GM 12 bolt rear axle handles the power
effectively.
Undercarriage
Lots of black metal, no surface rust, and a sturdy frame make up
the underside of this car. Independent coil spring suspension for
the front ride, and on the rear is a leaf spring setup complete
with Caltrac bars. Disc brakes are on the front, and rear. Headers
and race mufflers are on, and a shout to the trunk where a fuel
cell and the battery has been added in and it sits on nice
carpeting.
Drive-Ability
All is well with this straight liner. It has plenty of
acceleration, good braking after the run, and can also cruise on
the highway at fairly low rpm with the overdrive. You'll feel safe
and secure strapped into the racing seats.
Modified for the strip, but still can take on a cruise albeit a
fast one, this car has plenty of power, and runs swell. What else
can I say?!
