The 1941-1942 Willys Americar was an ordinary but well-built
compact passenger car produced under the presidency of Joseph W.
Frazer, (later of Kaiser-Frazer), and engineered by Barney Roos.
The L-head four-cylinder engine and ladder chassis were
conventional, while the sharp-nosed body styling owed a little to
previous Hudson's and Nashs.
Straying from its original design, but still in keeping with the
theme, we have a gasser version with a fiberglass body and updated
chassis. Put in a massive Dart SHP block based Chevy engine that
shines bright enough you need a pair of shades to look at it, and
fabricate a custom full on race interior, kids we are ready to
play.
Exterior
The entire body is fiberglass which is all in very nice condition
and has been finished in a matte black throughout. Starting up
front, the teardrop style headlights are nicely inset into the
fenders and the pointy hood is flanked on the lower part of it by a
rectangular shaped vertical toothed electric shaver style grille.
The back of this car has a beautiful line as it forms the split
oval rear window and curvaceous trunk line. Inside those massive
exaggerated but still tastefully shaped fenders are 15-inch ET
wheels on both front and back with gray spokes and polished lips.
The rear wheels are wrapped by giant 29x18.50R15 radials, and the
fronts by 26x6.00x15 radials. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!
Interior
A swing of the suicide hinged doors and we are met with totally
custom interior with a gloss black dash panel littered with a the
full gamut of AutoMeter Pro-Comp Ultralite silver faced gauges and
a mirror polished adjustable steering column. All buisnesfor the
dash front with a MSD timing controller, a small 12 volt fan and a
pair of praying hands in front of the passenger. Black carpet
floods the floors and on the hump between the seats is a white
Hurst ball topped shifter atop a Cowboy Cliff shifter bracket.
Seats keep to the racing motif with black vinyl coverings and
Simpson racing harnesses. A black steel roll cagecovers the
perimeter of the interior and above is a black tweed headliner
fitted in the front with a switch panel for the ignition, fuel
pump, cooling fans and starter. Rounding out our tour are black
tweed door panels with simple but eye catchingchrome cranks and
actuators. Smoooooooth!
Drivetrain
Just the facts ma'am...and unfortunately our consignor has provided
few as to the mill under the hood. What we do know is that tucked
into the engine bay is a Dart SHP 047 block of unknown displacement
topped with a pair of Pro-Filer aluminum cylinder heads and has an
aluminum intake manifold and 4bbl carburetor on top. This mill
throws power rearward to a 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission and
a Ford 9-inch rear axle makes the rear wheel spin. Keeping things
cool is an electric water pump and an aluminum radiator.
Sweeeeettt!
Undercarriage
More mechanical eye candy under here with gasser style leaf springs
and a solid axle up front and in the back is a ladder bar system
with adjustable coil-overs and directly behind it is a custom
aluminum fuel tank and electric fuel pump. 4-wheel disc brakes add
the woah! power, and Borla mufflersgather the exhaust from silver
coated headers and push them back through the pipes ending in front
of the rear tires. On the exhaust we note cutoutsfor those days
when you want to announce your arrival...from a mile away.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and as it warms up think of it as an orchestra
getting ready to play a symphony. We took her out and from personal
passenger experience this car is an E ticket ride! The radials take
a while to hook up, but when they do, I would be willing to say you
could do a low 11 second quarter with this car. And the sound is
incredible. The car is very stable despite its power, and you can
easily drive it normally on a back road or boulevard.
A not often seen car even in its original form, but this gasser
version is truly fun-tastic! With its wide fiberglass fenders,
beak-like hood, menacing matte black finish, and that race inspired
interior. My friends, this is an awesome build with some serious
balls. And the engine and drivetrain are true visual bling.
Sunglasses please, and I'll have a bullet to bite on during
takeoff.
