Vehicle Description
1947 Chevrolet Stylemaster Sport Coupe
After nearly four war years in which no civilian passenger cars had
been produced, Detroit could have sold anything with wheels that
went round and round. Chevrolet, along with most of its
competitors, shrewdly elected to serve up existing models. After
all, the paid-for factory tooling was already in place, and the
demand for new cars was unprecedented.
For consignment, a 1947 Stylemaster Sport Coupe which due to the
war is essentially a 1942 Fleetmaster with some tooling updates. It
is designated a sport coupe due to its two doors. Plenty of chrome
to contrast the exterior Oxford Maroon, and a buttoned up interior
lets go for a cruise!
Exterior
Chevrolet was kicking some styling butt in 1947, and looking at the
sleek forward facing lines of this car it could be moving, but it's
standing still. Even so it is still moving..our eyes visually, from
the swept forward "B" pillar to its voluptuous fenders and nicely
down curved "boot" this car just drips late 40's styling. The tall
standing knobby hood sits proudly above a horizontal ribbed chromed
grille which gets larger as it descends to the bumper. The back of
the car just uses curved lines to their max with not a straight
line seen anywhere, even the taillights. These straight steel
panels, laser measured gaps, and solid construction, are sprayed
with an Oxford Maroon. The paint job is looking snappy with a nice
spit shine overall. I love the rear fender skirting and
"italicized" rear glass styling which shows the aforementioned
motion. Maroon steel wheels are wrapped with wide white rubber, and
feature Chevrolet badged dog dish caps on all 4 corners.
Interior
Yards of tan felt cover seating, and door panels. Door panels make
use of beautiful faux painted metal in grained wood for the
interior window surrounds. Perfectly chromed door handles and
cranks are topped with cream bakelite bezels, and present very
nicely. Some water staining is present on the door panels. Looking
at the very utilitarian but functional dash, we see an alignment of
rectangular gauges to drivers left, and a speedo on the left which
is attached to a wonderful horizontal chromed speaker frame and
ending on the other side in a circular clock. Cream Bakelite knobs
are noted, as is the steering wheel surround, which has a
beautifully aged color and which contrasts to the dark tan metal
paint sprayed dash. A must note is the light beige felted cloth
seating with its sexy art nouveau inspired curved backs highlighted
in dark piping. There is a split back bench run front, and a solid
bench in the rear, and it appears unused. Flooding the floors is a
hook and loop medium beige carpeting which shows like new.
Headliner is showing aging and a bit darker, but in fine unstained
condition, nice and tight. Also need to give a shout out to the
trunk area covered in ribbed rubber panels and carpeting with a 2
tier setup for 2 spare tires.
Drivetrain
The 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder engine within a clean restored and
repainted engine bay shows as very clean and utilizes a cast valve
cover. To its driver's side is a 1 barrel carburetor, (ca.1954, the
original comes with the car!), with a chromed open air cleaner
replacing the dirty oil bath setup that originally came from the
factory. A 3 speed manual transmission pushes power rearward to a
4.11 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Stamped steel panels and all the working of the inner fenders and
some suspension parts have a fine coating of surface rust, but
certainly nothing invasive. A new fuel tank and fuel filter is
noted, along with new gas lines and new wiring. Braking on all 4
corners is manual drums, and the ride is provided by front
independent coil springs, and rear leaf springs.
Drive-Ability
One of my favorite things to do is a test drive and it is made even
more special when I can hop into a late 40's mass of Detroit iron
and just go for a cruise. So I did, (one of the perks of the job),
and this car ran swimmingly, handled nicely and was an overall nice
experience save for a vacuum leak preventing the wipers from
working. It got me away from the madcap antics of the showroom, and
took me back to a pre-birth, (for me), era few get to really
experience, which was just fab!
Some post war retooling and styling, a nice standard car which can
easily get you from point A to point B and turn some heads in the
way. Mechanically sound, and all looking good in the maroon.
