Vehicle Description
1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS396
When you go shopping for an SS396, it's not all that simple to
determine the authenticity of a machine. Chevrolet is notorious for
its lack of records with which to investigate the history of
individual details. It's easiest to look for clues that a car is
not an SS396 than to say definitively that one is, though the
Norwood factory did give us one way to say for certain: If a car
has a trim tag proclaiming "X22" or "X66," that car is an
SS396.
For consignment, an X22 coded numbers matching 396ci L34 V8 which
puts out 350hp. This car has been painted prior to the current
consignor's purchase back in 1987, so it shows cracking and
checking which is not showing up in the photos, however you can see
it when viewing the car close up. Other added goodies are there, a
nice interior, new carpeting, and ready to chew up a Mustang for
dinner.
Exterior
All OEM steel is on this car and it has been resprayed in Fathom
Green. As noted in the intro, there is cracking and crazing
throughout on this paint. Gaps are well minded, and panels are very
straight and rust free. In front the grille shows the SS badge in
the center of the egg crate which is in black. Slotted head
lighting is flanking on either side. Some running lights are below
a simple bumper on a steel panel and on the bottom of that is a
black chin spoiler. As you move back a "Super Scooper" hood is on.
At either outer edge of the bumper in front is a white stripe that
wraps upward to the grille and then runs rearward to become a spear
that dies before the door handles. Nice polished stainless
trimmings are around the wheel wells, rockers and glass. Chromed
side view mirrors and door handles and locks present in very nice
non pitted condition. In the front of the rear wheel well are some
slotted venting and in back is a smaller rear deck spoiler which
has horizontal single lens tail lights on either side and a
centrally located SS badge. Another thin bumper for the rear and
the rear roll pan has the backup lights and polished stainless
tailpipes peeking out from either side. 14 x 7 rally wheels are on
and wrapped in raised white lettered BFG Radial T/A rubber on all 4
corners.
Interior
As we open the doors, Midnight Green vinyl covers their interior
panels. This mixes with some thin chromed trimmings, and has small
tuck and roll in the center where the armrest resides, as well as
the window crank. Inside pristine Midnight Green vinyl low back
buckets are in front. These have horizontal ribbed inserts and
smooth shiny bolsters along with high headrests on top. A green
center console with some faux wood grain and molded vinyl panels
runs from the dash to the rear bench seat, in the same styling as
the buckets. An aircraft style dual post "throttle" shifter is
seen. In front of this rectangular gauges have been added on, and
to the console right, another aftermarket gauge. The standard GM
dash and instruments including a tachometer are in front of the
original steering wheel and are circular gauges in rectangular
spaces. There is just a bit more faux wood graining on the dash
which serves as a background for the radio and knobs and a slider
for the wiper/washer. New carpeting has been installed by the
current consignor, and it presents in a warm dark gray. A tight
black headliner is above.
Drivetrain
Under the hood which shows an orange/red block with orange red
valve coverings are all within a restored engine bay. This is a
numbers matching 396ci L34 V8. Inside is a Lunati Voodoo hydraulic
cam, a Jegs gear drive, the cylinders have been bored .030 over,
and there are Comp Cams roller tipped rockers. On top is a Holley
4bbl, (750cfm), and on back a replacing the original manual
transmission, a TH400 3 speed automatic transmission, (which is a
correct automatic for a 1969 396ci L78 or L89 V8). On back is a 12
bolt 3.08 Posi, (by stamping code out is a 4.10 posi), rear axle
which was one of the many ratios available forl the SS396's.
Chambered dual exhaust is on for the exhale.
Undercarriage
Very much like a show car with a like new fuel tank, nicely
restored and painted wheel wells, floor pans and unibody rockers.
Independent coil spring front suspension and leaf springs are on
back for the ride. Power disc braking is on front, and power drums
for the rear.
Drive-Ability
I slipped inside and took in the minty condition vinyl seats, and
gazed at all the gauges. A turn of the key and I was off. On the
test track it has stellar acceleration, solid bias free braking,
and rail like handling. All functions were operational at the time
of my test drive.
All verified and all SS396 for 1969, this has not been rodded, not
been visually damaged in any way, just brought back to original
form, which is a real plus. A few subtle add-ons and tasteful
upgrades to the interior, here is a real car for your serious
consideration, right out of 1969 Peabody. Let's get in the way back
machine.
