Vehicle Description
1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL
It started automotive life innocently enough in 1961. An upscale
model within a new line of compacts designed-in part-to stem the
rising tide of cheap, economical imports, while stealing sales away
from Rambler. Not coincidentally, production of excessively large,
mid-priced cars had been floundering since the late Fifties. But
this humble start for Oldsmobile's Cutlass belied its eventual
impact; the badge had longevity on its side, becoming the most
popular car in America in the process. Its secret recipe for
success was an open book for decades: Put simply, it was the
biggest bang for the buck, in the right size, with a face that
everybody loved.
Named after the familiar short curved blade sword used by
swashbuckling sailors, this Cutlass SL in 1997 form comes to us in
excellent condition. The SL stands for Supreme Luxury. Gone is the
powerful engine, convertible, and other options as this would prove
to be the last year of production. Bathed in white with black
accenting, just come to the showroom and look for the dancing
noodle.
Exterior
All panels are straight and true and painted in white. The rounded
front of the car looks much like scowling eyebrows for the hood as
they overhang the rectangular headlights tucked just above the
neoprene body matching bumper. This bumper has horizontal ribs
within its design, and these ribs carry the entire circumference of
the car residing just above the rockers on either side, and through
the rear bumper. Gaps are nicely minded, safety glass has black
surrounds, and a nice panoramic B pillar window offers up plenty of
wide vista viewing as the world goes by in the rear bench. On the
back, large tail lighting resides on each corner and flanks a nice
sized trunk. Paint overall is very good, and some snappy 5 lug
wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we see expertly molded plastic and vinyl
in beige with some velour broadcloth for the uppers. On the bottom
a molded storage area and door pull, and within are controls for
power locks, windows and a side view mirror joystick and shiny door
actuating handle. Inside high backed swanky styled power bucket
seats in pristine beige broadcloth velour are flanking a center
console in dark beige with black accenting. A beige broadcloth
velour rear bench is behind the buckets and is fairly easily
accessible for the passengers that are destined to sit there.
Upfront the original analog gauge black dash with instrument inset
in front of the wheel, and round knob controls in the center in
rectangular boxes is the mantra for this dash, looking very
European. No cracks runs, drips, or errors for the dash top also in
light beige. Tan carpeting does a clean sweep through the interior
and above a beige headliner is nice and tight.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an unrestored although clean with some dust and
dirt but no rust 3.1 liter V6 mill. It has multipart EFI and a
4T60E 4 speed automatic transmission. A 3.33 final drive is on this
model.
Undercarriage
Underneath straight rust free steel stamped floor pans and solid
unibody construction abound. No rust, just some white factory
overspray and organized brake fluid lines along with the exhaust
keep things very simple. Independent front with MacPherson struts
and independent with transverse leaf spring suspension in back
provide the ride, and power disc brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
With plenty of recent service description documents, this car
started quickly and off to the test track in a flash where it
performed like a blue, (uhhh ummmm WHITE), streak! Solid braking
bias free, good handling and a comfy broadcloth interior with all
working accessories which is a good thing.
The consignor cared enough about this vehicle to make sure it was
in tip top shape prior to its arrival and taking up residence in
our Hallowed Halls. Now here for the taking, a true Oldsmobile and
a new REO so you can pass it on to your grandson!
