Vehicle Description
1950 Mercury Eight Coupe - Custom Lead Sled - Chevrolet 350ci V8 -
Automatic Transmission - House of Kolor Brandywine and Candy Apple
Red Custom Exterior - Custom Light Gray and Red Vinyl Noted as the
third generation of the Mercury Eight, this model line was produced
from 1949 to 1951. This was the first Mercury of the
Lincoln-Mercury division and shared its body with the Lincoln,
instead of the Ford. In place of the updated prewar body, Mercury
adopted pontoon bodies, ending the use of running boards entirely,
along with separate fenders. Within its era and beyond, the
third-generation Mercury Eight was popular with customizers. In
1949, Sam Barris built the first lead sled from a 1949 Mercury
Eight and became the definitive hot rod. Fiberglass replicas of the
Eight, inspired by Sam Barris' car, are still in production and are
popular with custom and rod enthusiasts. Presented here is a
completely customized hot rod lead sled Mercury. Featuring a custom
two-toned Brandywine and Candy Apple Red paint job from House of
Kolor, this coupe is stunning. Complimenting the one-of-a-kind
paint are the multiple chrome accents which have been polished to
an expert shine. White wall tires and rear fender covers complete
this overall look. A few paint chips are noted by the fuel door, on
the hood and front valance along with an extremely small blemish on
the bottom of the right front door. The Chevrolet 350 V8 was
sourced from Jasper and is topped by a four-barrel Quadrajet
carburetor and Edelbrock intake manifold. Power to the rear axle is
sourced by a Monster Transmissions built GM TH200-4R four-speed
automatic transmission. A custom dual exhaust runs the length of
the vehicle while simulated lake pipes provide a true lead sled
look. Overall, it is noted that this vehicle starts, runs and
drives well. This Mercury features a lowering kit for the original
double-wishbone suspension in front and the leaf-sprung solid axle
in the rear while sitting on a body-on-frame chassis. Sporting a
rebuilt manual steering box and hydraulic drum brakes this vehicle
operates properly and provides a smooth road experience. In total,
the frame and undercarriage components present with minimal
corrosion and weathering present. Customization continues inside
this Mercury with a custom light gray and red vinyl upholstery. Red
carpeting and dark gray instrument panel, complete with modern
Stewart Warner gauges, contrast the whole look but retains the
original cast-aluminum cladding. A Blaupunkt AM/FM radio has been
inserted into the dash alongside the original switchgear for
wipers, turn signals and lamps, which are noted to be in fine
working order. There are no visible stains or signs of wear and lap
belts have been added for additional safety. As unique as the
original lead sled created by Sam Barris, this Mercury is truly as
showstopper. If you are looking to get into the hot rod or custom
scene, this vehicle is ready to go. This genuinely is a vehicle to
see in person. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific
