For Sale: 1978 GMC Caballero in Layton, Utah

Vehicle Description

This 1978 GMC Caballero spent time in Texas where it remained until 2000 when it was relocated Utah prior to being acquired by the seller in 2022. The truck is finished in sunburnt orange/brown over tan cloth upholstery and is powered by a 350ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes chrome bumpers, body-color mirrors, 14″ wheels, front disc brakes, cruise control, air conditioning, and a push-button AM/FM radio. This Caballero shows 62k miles believed to be original to the vehicle based on information from the 2 previous owners.  Utah title in the sellers name.

The car is said to have been factory finished in bronze and was repainted in the current shade of sunburnt organge/brown  under previous ownership. Equipment includes chrome bumpers with bumperettes, bright trim, body-color side mirrors, a wrap-around rear window, a painted bedliner, and a single exhaust outlet. The rear windshield molding clips were replaced in August 2021.

Factory 14″ steel wheels with wire-style covers are mounted with 205/75 white-stripe Toyo Eclipse tires with 2008 date codes. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. The shocks were replaced in June 2021.

The cabin features a split bench trimmed in tan cloth with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, cruise control, Aztec-style floor mats, a locking glovebox, and a Delco push-button AM/FM radio. The air conditioning system was recharged with R134a refrigerant in May 2021.

A two-spoke steering wheel is mounted to a tilting column and frames an 80-mph speedometer along with auxiliary gauges displaying voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 62k miles, about 500 of which were added by the seller. The seller states that the clock is not functional.

The 350ci V8 features a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 170 horsepower. Work under previous ownership included flushing the coolant as well as replacing the engine belts, the cooling fan clutch, the spark plugs and wires, and the distributor cap and rotor.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. A replacement muffler was installed in 2013, and additional underbody photographs are presented in the gallery.
